Overview of CCSS and PARCC Cindy Weinrich

Common Core Curriculum State Standards for Math have Two Parts: Content Standards: What students need to know at each grade level. These are grade specific skills. (Each state may add 15% add’l curricula per grade level.) Practice Standards: How students will think, do and talk about math. These are the same in all grades K-12.

Highlights of CCSS: Approximately 47 states in US have adopted in or since 2010. They require procedural fluency and understanding of concepts and skills The standards promote rigor through mathematical proficiencies that foster reasoning and understanding across discipline High School Standards grouped by Content Area i.e. Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry

Implementation of the Common Core State Standards in New Jersey Adopted by NJ State Board June 16, 2010 http://www.corestandards.org Implementation Schedule: Mathematics 2011-2012 K-2 2012-2013 3-5, HS 2013-2014 6-8 2014-2015 National Assessment

Summary of CCSS: There is focus, coherence and clarity at all grades There is a focus on key topics at each grade level There are coherent progressions across grade levels Addresses long-heard criticism of mile-wide, inch-deep math curricula

Changes by Grade Level: Biggest Changes in Grades 1-2: Fact Fluency, Mathematical Properties Biggest Changes in Grades 3-5: Much heavier emphasis on FRACTIONS and Mathematical Properties Add’l Changes in Grade 3: Memorization for MULTIPLICATION FACTS, Add’l Changes in Grade 4: ANGLES and ANGLE MEASUREMENT, Finding Factors, Primes and Composites Add’l Changes in Grade 5: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions, Volume, Multiplication and Division of Decimals No probability until Grade 6.

Two Main Testing Companies: PARCC: (The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) Eastern Half of U.S. Smarter Balance: Western Half of U.S.

PARCC and SBAC

The Nuts and Bolts of PARCC PARCC is an alliance of 25 states, educating nearly 25 million students, that are working together to develop a common set of K-12 assessments in English and Math anchored in what it takes to be ready for college and careers. PARCC is led by 17 governing board states (and D.C.) Note: NJ is a member of this governing board.

Goals for PARCC Create high-quality assessments Build a pathway to college and career readiness for all students Support educators in the classroom Develop 21 st century, technology-based assessments Advance accountability at all levels

14 PARCC & SBAC Online assessments for Grades 3-8 and high school Use of a mix of item types, including selected response, constructed response, technology enhanced and complex performance tasks. Two components, both given during final weeks of the school year. Use of both electronic and human scoring, with results expected within two weeks.

Additionally, the Assessments Summative A. The Mathematics Performance Based Assessments will focus on applying skills, concepts, and understandings to solve multi-step problems requiring abstract reasoning, precision, perseverance, and strategic use of tools. B.End-of-Year Assessment (EOY) administered after approx. 90% of the school year has been completed. Formative A.Early Assessment designed to be an indicator of student knowledge and skills so that instruction, supports and professional development can be tailored to meet student needs. B.Mid-Year Assessment comprised of performance-based items and tasks, with an emphasis on hard-to-measure standards. After study, individual states may consider including as a summative component

16 What’s the Point? Curriculums will NOT: – Teach isolated skills Curriculums will: – Make math connect to real world – Model mathematics – Engage students in math lessons that encompass with technology
