WHAT’S HAPPENING IN 2016-2017? MYP Edition

SCHEDULE (WITH BELLS) The CECA MYP will have longer class periods and will have bells alerting students when class begins and ends.  Classes will now be approximately 50 minutes in length.  Passing periods will be longer.  Students will have the opportunity to take honors math classes.  There will be four minutes added to the end of the day.  Students will be able to choose one elective (Keep in mind that all students need at least one year of a performing art before promoting to the high school level).

MATH OPTIONS MYP students will have the opportunity to take the following higher level math classes: Honors Math 6, Honors Math 7, Math 1 (8 th grade)  Math 6H – This course covers the same standards as Math 6, but it covers them in greater detail and at a deeper level of rigor. It is more project-based and the homework load will be heavier. Also, the assessments are cumulative.  Math 7H – This course covers all of the Math 7 standards and almost all of the Math 8 standards (all but 11 standards). Also, assessments will be cumulative.  Math 1- This course is the entry-level math course for high school. Taking this course as an 8 th grade student allows a freshman to begin high school in Math 2, thus reaching calculus by their senior year.

WHAT IS INTEGRATED MATH? Mathematics is taught as a combination of different math concepts. This allows for students to bridge connections by learning to blend topics like algebra, geometry, and statistics each year. “Integrated math has growing support in the mathematics-education community. A study published in the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education last year tracked students over three years and found that those who were being taught with an integrated-math curriculum outperformed their counterparts who were in a traditional sequence.” (Will, 2014)

SPANISH CHANGES Spanish will become more of an immersive experience. Spanish teachers will work with core subject teachers to provide students the opportunity to use the language beyond the Spanish classroom. All eighth grade students will take the end-of-year exam which, if passed, will allow students to take Spanish 2 as a freshman. Advanced Spanish will be available in a differentiated setting for native speakers. Parents will have access to yearly Spanish benchmarks so that they can monitor their student’s progress.

ELECTIVES Speech and Debate (performing art credit) Drama (performing art credit) Choir (Performing art credit) Grizzly News (Performing art credit) Student Leaders (requirement: maintain passing grades in all classes at progress report time and report card time) Yearbook Intramural Sports (requirement: maintain passing grades in all classes at progress report time and report card time) IB Guided Study (assigned course if struggling with completing work) Math Support (assigned or requested if math help is necessary)

SIXTH GRADE CLASSES Students will remain in cohorts, but we will be mixing up the cohorts to start the year. While students will have a morning homeroom teacher, they will see all teachers throughout the day. All electives are open for sixth grade students to request. Sixth grade will also have longer periods.

SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE CLASSES Students will be mixed throughout the day. A student could potentially have a different class make-up each period. Announcements will be made during first period, so there are two extra minutes added to that period. Grizzly News will be shown on Fridays during one period a day on a rotating schedule. PE locker rooms will be available for 7 th and 8 th grade students during the second half of the school year. Please do not purchase clothes at this time. We will let you know when to purchase the clothes. Most likely, we will recommend buying clothes that can also be used at YHS.

SPORT LEAGUE CECA will be joining the Inland Valley Sport League and will participate in the following sports:  Flag Football  Girls Volleyball  Softball  Basketball  Soccer

HOW TO JOIN Students in grades 6-8 are able to participate in the sport league. If we have more students than can fit on a team, we will hold a tryout. Transportation details and requirements will be shared early next school year. We will continue to offer intramural sports during lunches for students who do not wish to play in the league.

COMMUNITY SERVICE MYP students are required to complete 20 hours of community service per year.  Opportunities will be provided in and out of school  A reflection will need to be completed in Managebac for each volunteer activity. Students will be trained on how to do this at the beginning of the school year.

HOMEWORK Students should not have more than 90 minutes of homework per night unless they are taking Honors Math. Managebac will be updated, minimum, every two weeks (there will be Parent U opportunities for Managebac training) Math assistance and ELA assistance will be available two times a week before or after school to help students. There will also be support during elective periods if a parent/ guardian or student prefers.

ASSISTANCE Do not wait! If you have any questions or concerns, call the school immediately or contact your teacher through their Remind or Class Dojo account. Visit your student’s classes or, even better, volunteer to help in class! Attend Parent U opportunities or view the tutorials online (YouTube). Ask for a parent-teacher meeting if your concerns are not addressed.
