ELIXIR SAB Feedback (December 2014) Key points for consideration and action taken: Align 2015 Pilot Actions with ELIXIRs Infradev3 proposal Action: Priorities for additional Pilots in 2015 developed with this in mind Review and steer the ELIXIR TeCG and TrCG, though setting of objectives and task force reviews. Action: ELIXIR TeCG and TrCG tasked with providing a list of objectives. 3

ELIXIR SAB Feedback (December 2014) Spend some time each year on forward planning to ensure ELIXIR keeps abreast of new technologies and data science needs and consider future developments and initiatives. Action: Point for consideration within the agenda for future HoNs meeting Develop strategies and operational procedures that describe how ELIXIR Nodes can expand to include new researchers and scientists, and a general mechanism for how Nodes propose new directions and activities. Action: Point for discussion by the ELIXIR Board 4
5
ELIXIR SAB Feedback (December 2014) Find ways to engage with the human health communities and to get human genetics involvement in some of the ELIXIR Nodes. Action: Potential pilot action with EGA / BBMRI for launch in 2015.
6
Priorities for additional ELIXIR Pilot Actions in 2015 Considering SAB feedback priorities for additional ELIXIR Pilot Actions in 2015 will include: Development of the genome annotation network Work with EGA/BBMRI for submission and management of human data Follow up on the ELIXIR- NIH Research Object Identifier workshop held January 2015 Pursuing discussions EFPIA on IMI data Beginning technical work on the development of ELIXIR “Metrics”

8
Guidelines for ELIXIR Node evaluation Draft guidelines reviewed by the ELIXIR SAB December 2014. Now presented to the ELIXIR Board for approval (ELIXIR/2015/9) In addition to the review of new ELIXIR Node applications at each full, face to face meeting normally held at the ELIXIR Hub in December each year, the SAB will carry evaluation of a subset of ELIXIR Nodes according to the rota agreed between ELIXIR Director and the Chair of the SAB, such that a subset of existing ELIXIR Nodes is reviewed each year. Comments from the SAB will then be shared with the Node and the ELIXIR Board.
9
Guidelines for ELIXIR Node Evaluation ELIXIR SAB Node application and periodic review summary form templates revised to: Include ‘added value of the Node to ELIXIR’ and ‘added value of ELIXIR to the Node’ as separate sections. Explicitly ask the SAB provide recommendations regarding significant gaps and opportunities which could be explored by the Node. The ELIXIR periodic review form (for completion by Nodes for review) is revised to: Include more detail around the process for evaluation Highlight ELIXIR funded activities Request summary of changes since the last review

www.elixir-europe.org Update on plans for developing National Nodes (agenda point 18) 12/06/2016
11
ELIXIR Capacity Building Pilot 2015 Purpose: to build the strategy to increase the joint competence and capacity of small and medium sized Nodes lacking large user community, large scale projects and big data or having short record of offered tools and services. Through: Bringing Nodes together with staff from more established ELIXIR Nodes Supporting the development of staff exchange between ELIXIR Nodes and with the ELIXIR Hub Mapping projects at selected Nodes and determining areas of common interest Looking to identify and apply technical solutions at/between ELIXIR Nodes
12
ELIXIR Capacity Building Pilot 2015 Deliverables: Report mapping current approaches to national organisation across the ELIXIR Nodes including SWOT analysis of Nodes with recommendations and options for development, to include recommendations on how to address SAB request for uniform approach to develop national nodes and service plans. Report describing current approaches to supporting national data management across ELIXIR Nodes to include gap analysis and local interfaces to other ESFRI RI, and recommendations for development of ELIXIR “data nodes network” / data coordinator group objectives.
13
ELIXIR Capacity Building Pilot 2015 Deliverables (Cont.): Establish staff exchange programme between ELIXIR Nodes to identify and apply good practice / technical solutions at/between Nodes Dissemination plans to including stop / go decision for inclusion of additional Nodes
14
ELIXIR Capacity Building Pilot 2015 Next steps: Capacity building survey to be sent to all Nodes for completion Workshops to be held on “Best practice in organising national bioinformatics’ and ‘Creating a roadmap for ELIXIR Data Nodes Network’ Plans and cost-model to be developed for ELIXIR staff exchange programme
15
www.elixir-europe.org Discussion (agenda point 19): ‘How to ensure ELIXIR Nodes are inclusive of national communities looking to join ELIXIR’ 12/06/2016
16
Topic for discussion with the ELIXIR Board.“.“ Feedback from the ELIXIR SAB: “We recommend that the nodes develop strategies and Operational procedures that describe how they can expand to include new researchers and scientists. We believe that ELIXIR will be most successful if there are opportunities for others to join.’ Discussion: How to ensure ELIXIR Nodes are inclusive of national communities looking to join ELIXIR? -Response to plans for building capacity within the Nodes -Any other comments / suggestions
