The Vietnam War O 1960’s: Viet Cong: Communist guerilla fighters enter South Vietnam O U.S. afraid of the “domino theory” sent first supplies then troops O 1964: Gulf of Tonkin Resolution allowed President Johnson to proceed in war O Guerilla fighting, jungles of Vietnam, and support of villagers made them military targets

The Vietnam War O 500,000 American troops committed to war through draft O Tet Offensive 1968: guerrilla forces came out of the jungles and attacked American and South Vietnamese forces in cities all across the south O 1973: Fierce antiwar opinion in America pushes Nixon to negotiate Paris Peace Accord, withdraw troops O Two years later, North Vietnam conquered South
