3 Learning intentions… ◦ Explore the connection between religion, particularly Christianity, and pacifism ◦ Understand why some religious believers are pacifists Success criteria: ◦ Be able to explain why some religious believers are pacifists and the connection between Christianity and Pacifism

4 Homework: ◦ Research the work of a famous religious pacifist. Examples could include Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Malala Yousafzai. 1.A/A* - Explain how their religious beliefs have influenced them to be a pacifist 2.B – Explain their work and what religious beliefs they hold 3.C – State a little about who they are, their religion and their pacifist acts

5 Pacifism… ◦ Pacifism is the belief that ALL war and violence is wrong. ◦ Pacifists believe that war is a category of violence that is never necessary, so they refuse to fight. ◦ If a war is declared, & they are ‘called up’, they become CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS, as killing people is against their conscience There were: 16,000 in WW1 59,000 in WW11 Task: Write the above into your own words or images. Extra challenge – Why do you think people were willing to go to prison for their pacifist beliefs? Explain your answer.

8 Christian Pacifists… ◦ Believe in TURNING THE OTHER CHEEK ◦ They are willing to die, but not to kill for their beliefs ◦ They refuse to be in combat roles in wars, but may be prepared to be ambulance drivers or nurses ◦ Martin Luther King was a Christian Pacifist 1.Write down – Martin Luther King = Christian pacifist 2.Extra challenge – make a list of other religious pacifists and put their religion next to their name e.g. Gandhi - Hindu
