2 What is the MONEE Project? Monitoring social and economic trends in the region since 1992 Has three main elements: –Annual Regional Monitoring Report –TransMONEE database –Working Papers and other related publications

3 The MONEE Project... … covers 27 countries and highlights huge disparities in a region where: 4 countries are OECD members, but... 8 are ranked by the World Bank as among the world’s ‘low income’ countries The project produces the only regular and comprehensive analyses of the social side of over a decade of transition

4 The MONEE Project... … compares trends in the region with counterpart western European countries … tracks changes year by year, statistically and analytically, in one of the world’s largest and most troubled regions

5 Fresh data on... Child poverty Health, mortality and nutrition Education Children in institutions Drug use, crime and punishment

6 … and on... Economic growth Employment Incomes Gender issues Family structure Demography

7 Data come in … Data are collected annually from correspondents in national statistical agencies in 27 transition countries These (and other) data are evaluated and analysed by the MONEE team in Florence They form the statistical basis of MONEE reports, including the flagship Regional Monitoring Report

8 and data go out … They are also made publicly available in a user-friendly format through the TransMONEE Database This can be downloaded from the IRC’s website: www.unicef-icdc.org

9 Dissemination Regional Monitoring Report No.8 A Decade of Transition (November 2001) 5,000+ copies in English and Russian to UNICEF Country Offices and National Committees, diplomatic missions, ministries, other international organizations, NGOs, researchers, media, etc. Largest distribution from IRC – the flagship publication of the Centre

10 Coverage Regional Monitoring Report No.8, A Decade of Transition, launched by UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy in Geneva Widespread media coverage through press events in the region and in international media centres: Geneva, NY and Berlin MONEE reports and the TransMONEE database are consistent performers on the IRC website

11 Impact of the Project International organizations – World Bank, EBRD, UNECE, UNDP – value our reports as reliable sources of statistical information and as pointers to areas of concern affecting the region World Bank’s World Development Indicators and EBRD’s Transition Reports draw on MONEE information and data

12 Impact of the Project Influences UNICEF programming in the region Contributes to the two-year programme for the region as a whole Implements UNICEF’s Medium Term Strategic Plan, which stresses UNICEF’s role as a catalyst and the need for world-class analysis of children’s issues

13 Impact of the Project Gives credibility to UNICEF offices in the region when advocating with governments, civil society and NGOS Opens doors to policy makers, other agencies, NGOs and many more

18 The future of MONEE The MONEE Project is evolving From 2002, the annual Regional Monitoring Report series will split into two separate publications: The Social Monitor The Regional Report

19 The future of MONEE The changes will allow the team do a better job: monitoring social trends producing in-depth studies on issues of particular concern targeting publications at the appropriate audiences This will generate more flexibility and timeliness, while maintaining the same rigorous standards

20 1. The Social Monitor Annual publication monitoring social and economic trends as they impact on rights and well-being of families and children in five main areas: Population change Poverty Education Health Child Protection

21 1. The Social Monitor It will also have articles on subjects such as: the spread of HIV quality in education child labour teenage pregnancy women’s employment and incomes public debt and social expenditure infants in public care

22 1. The Social Monitor...and it will include a substantial Statistical Annex with annual data for a large number of indicators for 27 transition countries It will be published annually in English and Russian, starting with the first issue in June 2002

23 2. Regional Reports Two Regional Reports will be published between 2002 and 2004 Each report will provide original and in- depth analysis on specific themes: children and disability (Spring 2003) child poverty and the labour market (Autumn 2004)

24 2. Regional Reports Publication of each Report will be followed by a major regional conference on the theme of the Report that will bring together experts, practitioners and policymakers to discuss issues raised by the Report’s analysis

25 3. Other Output We will continue to produce other output: TransMONEE database Technical working papers that underpin the reports Articles in academic journals and book chapters All our products will be available on the World Wide Web: www.unicef-icdc.org

26 Current donors Major funding in 2001/2002 has come from: The World Bank, UNICEF Regional Office for CEE/CIS/Baltics, and the Government of Italy (via IRC’s core funds) Minor funding has come from: the EBRD
