Creating Internal Citations and Works Cited Pages

What is an internal citation? An internal citations is when you give credit for the information from you research that you are using in your paper. In this class we will use the MLA system of citing sources within your paper. By using internal citations you will be avoiding plagiarism. There are different ways and formats to internally cite a source.

Text from a book to be cited Way 1: People in a growth mindset don’t just seek change, they thrive on it ( Dweck 21). Way 2: According to Carol Dweck, in her book Mindset the New Psychology of Success, “people in a growth mindset don’t just seek change, they thrive on it” (21). Way 3: Carol Dweck has looked extensively at the idea that those with a growth mindset don’t just seek change, they pursue and thrive on it (21).

Text from a Website Information from a Website with an author: Way 1 According to Carol Dweck, “Growth mindset more precisely, students who believed their intelligence could be developed (a growth mindset) outperformed those who believed their intelligence was fixed (a fixed mindset)”. Way 2 “Growth mindset, more precisely, students who believed their intelligence could be developed (a growth mindset) outperformed those who believed their intelligence was fixed (a fixed mindset)” (Dweck).

Information from a website without an author For Example: For my final personal purchase, which is my absolute favorite, I purchased a 7 Series BMW with all the bells and whistles and it cost $129,740 (“BMW USA”). If no author is found, you will Use the first 2-3 words of the Website name in quotation marks.

Works Cited A works cited page is a list of text evidence used in your paper. It has a special format that MUST be followed.

Works Cited So, now that I’ve written my paper I have to type a Works Cited page listing all the text evidence that I used in my paper. 1.A Works Cited page is separate from your research paper. 2.Remember that Works Cited entries MUST be alphabetized. 3.There is a format that MUST be followed for printed materials that is different from materials taken from a website.

Works Cited Page Print Format - Book Last name, First name. Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. So using the example above, my Works Cited Entry would look like this: Dweck, Carol. Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. New York: Random House, Inc., 2006. Print

Works Cited Page Print format - Article Apple, Sam. “Do Sports Fans Go To Far?” Scope. Oct. 2014:10-12. Print. O’Shei, Tim. “No! Sports Are More Important Than Ever.” Scope Jan. 2014:12-13. Print. Ripley Amanda. “Yes! It’s Time to Scale Back.” Scope Jan. 2014: 10-11. Print.

Works Cited Page Website Format: Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version number. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access. So in the examples I used before here’s what each one would look like: Dweck, Carol. Education Week. Education Week. 9 September 2015. Web. 16 November 2015. BMW USA. BMW of North America. 2015. Web. 16 November 2015.

Now let’s put it all together: Works Cited BMW USA. BMW of North America. 2015. Web. 16 November 2015. Dweck, Carol. Education Week. Education Week. 9 September 2015. Web. 16 November 2015. Dweck, Carol. Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. New York: Random House, Inc., 2006. Print. For more help check out the Purdue Owl website.
