2
THE MIGHTY ECONOMY SLOWS We were awesome for a while, but not the 70s Roots (Inflation): Lyndon Johnson – Deficit Spending Rising cost of materials (Competition) Oil - Based our economy on it How could a country use Oil as a weapon?
3
OPEC (ORGANIZATION FOR PETROLEUM EXPORTING COUNTRIES) 1973 – Israel at war with surrounding Arab countries US Supporting Israel OPEC –Embargo (stop shipping) petroleum to supporters of Israel After embargo, prices rose greatly All $$$$ going to gas (Recession) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpEVUqrNa5M
4
STAGNANT ECONOMY Increased international competition Rise of Europe and Japan US Imported more than exported Factories closed Growing pool of unemployed Nixon faced “stagflation” – rising prices/economic stagnation
5
STAGFLATION Economists didn’t think inflation and recession could occur at same time Believed that demand drove prices and inflation would occur in booming economy when demand for goods was high Unsure of what financial policy for government to do. Two plans: 1. Increase spending end recession but boost inflation 2. Raise taxes slow inflation, but keep economy in recession
6
NIXON’S PLAN Cut spending and raised taxes (Prompt Americans to spend less) Americans spend less, ease demand, drive down prices Congress/public protested Federal reserve to raise interest – Failed Then imposed 90 day freeze on wages and prices and issued federal regulations limiting future wages and price increases – Little success When he left office inflation was still high.
7
GERALD FORD TAKES OVER http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=uAFnTM5qChQ http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=uAFnTM5qChQ VP under Nixon Bland personality, but honest Degree from Yale Law School Navy during WWII House of Reps since 1949
8
FORD PARDONS NIXON Lets Nixon off the hook Acting out of public interest he claimed Avoid division that trial would create Fierce criticism (71-50%)
9
FORD “WHIPS” INFLATION Inflation and unemployment high WIN – Whip Inflation Now Cut back on oil and gas consumption It failed big time Cut government spending and higher interest rates FAILED
10
FORD FOREIGN POLICY Ford kept Kissinger – continued détente Helsinki Accords (Meeting with NATO & Warsaw) – Recognized the borders of Eastern Europe if Soviets upheld human rights (Let people cross borders) Soviets didn’t abide
11
ELECTION OF 1976 World was in a bad place -Needed someone to confront Gerald Ford vs. Jimmy Carter Carter promised energy programs, tax and welfare reform, and national medical care People trusted his honesty and moral http://ww w.youtube. com/watch ?v=BN- nmlicZv8& list=PLF0C 51E3AA2F 7B7E9
12
WAR AGAINST CONSUMPTION Nothing he tried worked Biggest problem – dependence on foreign oil Wanted to reduce it’s use Created Department of Energy High taxes on Oil plus rising prices created a crisi s “Malaise Speech” - Seemed like he blamed the people
13
