Two films which best illustrate the horror genre of more recent years are Psycho, made in 1960, and The Blair Witch Project, made in 1999. Psycho has been described as the “mother of all modern horror suspense films,” although that title might not be quite accurate since most critics see it as more of a psychological thriller than the kind of bloody horror film that came later. The film is about an office worker, Marion Crane, who steals $40,000 from her boss’ client and drives all day to escape. As night falls in the pouring rain, she turns off the motorway and decides to spend the night at the isolated Bates Motel, run by a strange young man, Norman Bates, who seems to be obsessed by his mother. I won’t give away the whole plot but then Norman serves Marion dinner and she goes back to her room for a shower. From that point on the fear and suspense increase and there is a horrific murder. In one way, The Blair Witch Project is quite different in that it pretends to be an amateur movie. It is about 3 film students who travel to Maryland to make a student film about a local legend, The Blair Witch. The 3 go in to the woods on a 2 day trek to find the Blair Witch, and never come back. One year later, the students’ video is found in the wood. Often there is a blank screen and all we hear is their scared cries and unexplained noises.

Horror films are scary movies in which frightening creatures appear or people are killed. People enjoy watching these movies because it’s exciting. They feel scared but safe at the same time. In the 1930s, vampires and other American Gothic elements appeared in horror movies. However, in the 1950s, American horror films moved towards science fiction while British ones became more gory. Two relatively recent examples of horror movies are Psycho and The Blair Witch Project. In Psycho, a woman runs away after stealing money. She stays at a quiet hotel where scary things happen and someone is murdered. Psycho is a psychological thriller. The Blair Witch Project, on the other hand, scares viewers by pretending to be real footage shot by amateurs. In the movie, three film students go into the woods after deciding to do research about the “Blair Witch.” They never come back and only their video footage is found.
