English I Do-Now: Silent Writing Time What do these poems have in common? What is the central theme of each of these poems? How can the themes be similar but the experiences so different? Which poem do you relate to most? Why?

Academic Talk (Table Partners) In small groups, discuss the following questions: What makes an essay a synthesis essay? How do the authors connect the evidence from both texts to a bigger, overarching statement? Two of these examples are synthesizing, and one is missing something. What is missing? How does this type of writing vary from a comparative or compare contrast essay?

Academic Talk Five Minutes: Share out what you wrote about in your SWT. Come to an agreement: What is the central idea or over- arching theme that connects all three of these texts. Create a one-sentence statement that represents your claim. Share out claims. Five Minutes: Discuss what students shared; decide if you want to stick to your claim or use another group’s claim that you feel is stronger.
