2 CRIME PREVENTION TIPS GOAL To make security companies and business owners aware of some safety tips and crime prevention strategies to prevent their business becoming a statistic. Presentation focuses on the crime of Robbery

3 CRIME PREVENTION TIPS Robbery Section 230 (1) Penal Code “ A person is guilty of robbery if he steals and immediately before or at the time on doing so, and in order to do so, he use force on any person or puts or seeks to put any person in fear of being then and there subjected to force.”

5 CRIME PREVENTION TIPS STATISTICS Robberies on Commercial Targets 1 ST January – 23 rd December 2009 Seven (7) cases occurred between 0601hrs - 1700hrs Four (4) cases – 1701hrs – 2300hrs Three (3) cases – 2301hrs – 0600hrs

6 CRIME PREVENTION TIPS Be Observant – Employees and Employers Watch for suspicious persons or vehicles around the business at opening and closing time. Persons wearing inappropriate clothing for the weather, such as heavy clothing during warm weather. Persons entering stores and watching your security systems eg. CCTV, security personnel etc.

7 CRIME PREVENTION TIPS Have a Security Plan Meetings to discuss and enhance security plans. Good Plan should contain: - Employee demeanor during the robbery (don’t resist) Notification of the police How to obtain suspect description How to obtain a vehicle description and license plate number Prearranged signals between employees How to activate alarms When not to activate alarms. Plan should become second nature to employees.

8 CRIME PREVENTION TIPS PHYSICAL DETERRENTS Well lit business especially the entrances and exits Installation of PROPER CCTV and alarm systems. Periodical testing of CCTV equipment to verify if it working effectively. Place signs and posters in doorways of video surveillance and minimum cash being in cash registers. Mark the edge of the main doorway with measuring tape. Helps the police to acquired an accurate height of the robbers.

9 CRIME PREVENTION TIPS BANK DEPOSIT TIPS Do not advertise that you are carrying the bank deposit. Avoid wearing name tags or clothing advertising your business when carrying deposit. Make deposits during daylight hours. Do not use a routine route when making deposit. Stay alert of your surroundings. Vary times of cash deposits/withdrawals. Armored vehicles can be an asset.

10 CRIME PREVENTION TIPS DURING A ROBBERY REMAIN CALM. DO NOT RESIST Take no action that may jeopardize your own safety If robber used a hold up note, retain it and handle it as little as possible If possible activate the alarm only if you can do so safely and without detection Alert other employees by the use of prearrange signals but only if it is safe to do so. MAKE MENTAL NOTES – Age, height, sex, clothes, color of eyes and hair, scars, tattoos, scent. Note the number of accomplices and how they left the premises, direction of travel, type and color of vehicle and licence plate Note the type, size and color of the weapon used Observed where robbers placed hands. Fingerprints might be left.

11 CRIME PREVENTION TIPS AFTER A ROBBERY Call the police immediately after the robbery. Lock all doors and ask all witnesses to remain until the police officers arrive. All witnesses should write down a description of all suspects. Try not to discuss the robbery or compare any notes about the robber appearance. Protect the scene. Do not touch anything
