2 Who should participate in this program? Cherrington Students (August + fall Cherrington) Students who cannot study abroad during the regular academic year 1 st and 2 nd year students that want to get a taste of living abroad Nothing to do during the summer?

3 Summer Study Abroad Program Spanish Minor/ Major Intermediate (2001, 2002, 2003) Upper level classes: 2100 – Conv. & Comp. 2300 – Iberian Cult.& Civ. 2350 – Latin Amer. Cult. & Civ. 3000 level class Summer Program: 2300 – Iberian Cult.& Civ. and One of these two: 2100 – Conv. & Comp / 3000 level

5 Universidad Internacional Menendez Pelayo (UIMP) One of the most outstanding institutions of higher education in Spain Theater performances, art exhibits, poetry readings…

6 Description of the Academic Program 4 DU credits, Iberian Culture and Civilization, taught by DU professor 4 transfer credits, a language class taught by a local professor

7 Within the City Vibrant cultural and social life Cooking and dancing classes, language partners, sailing, surfing…

8 Attention! Language pledge “It is a privilege to participate in this language immersion program and I commit to speak in Spanish at all times”

9 Dates (July 25-August 19) Four weeks in duration July 25 – arrival in Spain July 26-August 19 Classes and cultural trips on the weekends August 19 – Last day of Program

10 Cultural trips: Medieval and Modernist Spain Medieval town of Santillana del Mar ( World Heritage site) Gaudi’s “El capricho” in Comillas

11 Cultural Trips: from Prehistory to Post-modernity Prehistoric Caves of Puente Viesgo (World heritage site) Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao

12 Housing and Food Can live with host families within close distance of the University (walking or by bus) Private room Two meals per day with the family Laundry service

13 Staying in the Dorms Private room Around 200 international students on campus, from all over the world. Gym, piano room, TV room, tennis and soccer court.

14 Approximate cost breakdown GO ABROAD and PAY LESS Students take two classes: A DU class for which they pay DU tuition A local Spanish class for which they pay local tuition: $640 (Really Cheap!) Room, partial board, excursions: $1,270 TOTAL: $ 1900 NOT INCLUDED: Plane ticket (approx. $1300) Tuition for 4 DU credits

15 SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE What´s the cost of the DU class? Usually around $4,500, but tuition for the 4-credit DU class varies from student to student depending on their scholarships and/or summer financial aid awards. There is ample financial aid available this summer through DU. Contact the Financial Aid office
