Past and present tense – ed and ing Plurals – adding s; es; ies; ves; some irregular ones Short vowel – long consonant Long vowel – short consonant rule Best bet spelling strings What are the main spelling rules

Always ‘ed’ not just ‘d’ If a word ends in e, remind children you get rid of the orginal e and add ‘ed’ Watch out for the irregular ones: ran, swam, said

Plurals Mostly we just add ‘s’ If a word ends in ‘y’ look for the letter immediately in front: vowel + y = add s consonant + y = y +ies. If it makes an ‘iz’ sound, add ‘es’ Watch out for halves, wolves – listen for the ‘v’ sound

Long vowel = letter name. Short vowel – letter sound. This rule pretty much sums up every spelling rule Short vowel = double consonant Long vowel = single consonant
