Why Human Beings Need God’s Word Second Subject of Ten
2
God created human beings, so that when babies are born they have no knowledge. They much have care and be provided for. This is acknowledged even in myths. – Romulus and Remus – mythological founders of Rome. – Jungle character, Tarzan
3
God gave babies reflexes – Suckling reflex – Grasping reflex – Holding breath under water – Throwing out arms and legs when startled – Walking reflex – Righting reflex These help the baby survive until he can gain the knowledge necessary to live. But gaining the necessary knowledge to sustain life may take years.
4
A human being has the need to grow and mature in all four of the categories that make up his being. – Physical – Mental – Social – Spiritual Jesus Christ, the world’s only perfect man, developed and matured in all these areas: – ASV Luke 2:52 And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. The extent to which one does not grow and mature in any of these categories, is the extent to which a human being is disadvantaged, and I would even say, he is disabled.
5
Speaking of man’s spiritual needs, they are 25% of a person’s being. It must also be realized that one’s spirituality impacts all the other categories of man’s life, here on this earth.
6
Jesus became man so He could die and by dying, defeat Satan and deliver man from the bondage of the fear of death. ESV Hebrews 2:14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. Let’s look at some statements in which God has revealed knowledge that is very useful to man’s entire being.
7
God revealed that man does not know what he needs to know. ASV Jeremiah 10:23 O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. Man may think he know what’s best for him. ESV Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
8
God says man is wicked and unrighteous simply because he does not know how to live or think. NAS Isaiah 55:7-9 Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; And let him return to the LORD, And He will have compassion on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon. 8 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways My ways," declares the LORD. 9 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
9
These revelations from God are invaluable. 1. Man does not know how to live his life. 2. Even when he thinks he knows, his intentions lead to death. 3. The reason he does not now is because his way of acting and thinking are so inferior to the way God acts and thinks.
10
The Scriptures are directly from God’s mouth and they furnish man with all he needs to know so he can live a full and satisfying life on earth. – All that God wants for man is for man’s best interest, for his benefit, so he can live a complete life, full and satisfying, serving a purpose, not only for himself, but for others too. – The nature and purpose of all scripture is: ESV 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
11
Man needs nothing in addition to the Scriptures, yet he needs all of them. The Scriptures are good for: – Teaching – or doctrine – Reproof – to censure or rebuke – Correction – to right a wrong, punishment to affect reform – Training in righteousness – teachings in righteousness Righteousness is a noun: it is the name of the category of things that are right. All that is right, and therefore should be thought, said and done, are included in what this word designates.
12
So what is lacking? – Absolutely nothing! – On the contrary, if anything is added, or taken from them, or if they are changed in anyway, then they will no longer have the capacity to make anyone complete and equipped for every good work.
13
In Conclusion Let’s consider this question: What about the person who does not know what the Scriptures teach? – Certainly, if having and knowing the Scriptures equips one to live a fully useful, beneficial and satisfying life, not having and knowing them will prevent him from living such a life. – These are the reasons human beings need God’s Word. It equips them to live beneficial, fully satisfying lives on this earth, and they will be saved in eternity in the life to come.
