3 The Peace of Ausburg temporarily allowed German princes to choose the religion of their territory. But, soon fighting began again, called the 30 years war. This was finally ended by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.

5 By the time of the Reformation, Europeans had embarked upon a great age of Exploration Both Catholics and Protestants worked to spread their faith through missionaries, such as the Catholic Jesuits. Most English colonies in North America were Protestant. The Spanish, French, and Portuguese brought Catholicism to Canada, Mexico, the American Southwest, and South America.

6 Democracy is rule by the people, rather than kings. People saw that Protestant leaders were elected and they wanted that in their governments, too. They also became more willing to challenge authorities, such as kings, after having challenged the Pope.
