solubility
2
Q What is solubility? A: Solubility is the maximum amount of a solute which can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a fixed temperature
3
Q What are the factors that affect the solubility? A The three main factors affecting the solubility of a solute in a solvent are 1) The nature of the solute 2) The nature of the solvent 3) The temperature of the solution.
4
Q What is rate of dissolving? A: The rate of dissolving is the time taken for the dissolving process, from the time the solute is added to a solvent, until it has completely dissolved.
5
Q What are the factors that affect the rate of dissolving? A: a) Surface area of the solute b) Temperature of the solution c) The rate of stirring.

Q 37 Describe the terms solute, solvent, soluble, insoluble, filtrate, residue, dilute, concentrated and saturated solution. A: Solute: Solute is a substance that dissolves like sugar and salt. Solvent: The solvent is a substance that the solute dissolves in and forms the bulk of the solution. Ex in sugar solution sugar is solute and the water is solvent. Soluble: Which substances are soluble in solvent like sugar and salt can dissolve in water properly. Insoluble: Which substances cannot dissolve properly like sand cannot not dissolve in water properly. Dilute solution: Solution that contains a small amount of solute in a large amount of solvent. Ex little sugar or salt in large amount of water. Concentrated solution: Solution that contain a large amount of solute in a dissolved in its solvent. Ex sugar or salt in water. Saturated solution: Solution that contain large amount of solute in a little amount of solvent. Ex large amount of sugar or salt in small amount of water. (When no more sugar or salt can dissolve in water). Filtrate: The liquid that passes through the filter paper is called filtrate. Like salt solution can pass through the filter paper. Residue: The solid that remains in the filter paper is called residue. Like sand is residue. It stays behind as its particles are too big that it cannot go through the filter paper.

Q Why is water different from others? A: Water is a universal solvent as many solutes can dissolve in it. It is unusual as it expands instead of contract as it freezes to become ice.
