4. Oil As An Energy Source Oil As An Energy Source Advantages  Considered easy to handle, store and transport.  Easier to extract from the ground than coal and more cost effective to transport. Disadvantages  Releases carbon gases into the atmosphere when burned.  Drilling may affect ocean and terrestrial habitats. The threat of oil spills exists.

5.  Dangers include explosions and oil spills.  Ocean habitats can be disturbed from exploration and extraction.  Natural gas is still a non renewable resource. Disadvantages  Produces large amounts of energy with less air pollutants.  Easy to transport.  Less time and money to build a gas plant than for coal plants. Advantages Natural Gas As An Energy Source

Nuclear Power As An Energy Source Advantages  Does not pollute the air or produce greenhouse gases.  Can be built in urban or rural areas, and does not radically alter the environment around them. Disadvantages  Used rods and Uranium pellets must be stored.  The cold water used to cool the rods is emptied in to river, could cause fish kills if it’s not cooled off adequately.

7. Renewable Energy  Replaced as quickly as it is used.

11. Wind Energy Advantages  Clean and renewable Disadvantages  Dependent on strong steady winds blowing most of the time.  Wind farms take up a lot of land.  Very noisy!!!

12. Biomass Energy Advantages  Renewable Disadvantages  Burning wood and crops release as much CO 2 as burning fossil fuels.  Biomass crops take up land that could be used to grow food.  Ethanol is still too expensive to produce on a large scale
