Patron-Driven Acquisition Getting In The Game Linette Koren and Roman Koshykar Rochester Institute of Technology Presented at Upstate New York Science Librarians Meeting October 25, 2010
2
Not one, but TWO patron-driven acquisition projects RIT piloted two patron-driven acquisition (PDA) projects for e-books in 2010 Consortial project in conjunction with ConnectNY (CNY) on Coutts MyiLibrary platform (began in late winter) Local project on ebrary platform (began in early April)
3
Discussion Points Display of records in OPAC Budgeting and profiling Setting purchase triggers Effect on collection development & reference Initial results of projects Things to consider
6
Budgeting and Profiling Coutts/CNY budget - $50K deposit account funded by CNY central funds and member library contributions; multi-use Coutts/CNY profile – very broad to appeal to entire consortium; ebooks from four publishers chosen within publication year range
7
Budgeting and Profiling ebrary/RIT budget – $25K deposit account set up with ebrary; single use ebrary/RIT profiling – specific subject area, language, call number ranges, publication date, price point, certain publishers removed, relevant to RIT programs
8
Purchase triggers ConnectNY PDA on Coutts MyiLibrary – On set-up of project, purchase triggered on second use of book Clicks from the catalog record not counted in trigger; actual reading of ebook content is what matters – Going forward, purchase trigger will be increased to three uses Pilot project funding has been expended Based on pilot results, CNY renegotiated with Coutts for Phase 2
9
Purchase triggers RIT PDA on ebrary On set-up of project: Purchase triggered after five interactions Much more expansive definition of interactions with ebrary o Clicks from the catalog record to the book in the ebrary database count As of October 1: Purchase trigger changed o 10 page views in body in a user session OR 10 minutes of real usage per title in a user session OR copying or printing from title o Result of ebrary interface and profiling changes
10
Effect on collection development and reference service Faculty/student purchase requests Selecting from approval plans, Choice, publisher’s emails, catalogs, blurbs, etc. Multiple records in catalog – after initial de-dupping No difference between a purchased book and a non- purchased book Care at Reference Desk not to demo thru to a trigger point
11
Initial results – RIT ebrary PDA project As of October 5: 238 titles purchased Total expenditure of $19,609 Examples of titles purchased: Medical Imaging : Principles, Detectors, and Electronics Growth Market Nanotechnology : An Analysis of Technology and Innovation Climate Change : Observed Impacts on Planet Earth
12
Initial results – MyiLibrary PDA project 295 titles purchased during ConnectNY pilot project Examples of titles purchased: Catholics in the Movies Understanding Society Through Popular Music Plastic Fantastic Colloquial Korean Football Hooliganism in Europe
13
Things to consider Further de-dupping Permanence of records Single or multi-use Local control
