Topic: Atmospheric Heating PSSA: 3.5.7.C / S8.D.2.1
2
Objective: TLW describe the three ways heat energy is transferred through the atmosphere. TLW describe the three ways heat energy is transferred through the atmosphere.

MI #1: Radiation Radiation is the transfer of heat energy as electromagnetic waves. Radiation is the transfer of heat energy as electromagnetic waves. The heat energy that the Earth receives from the sun is transferred through radiation. The heat energy that the Earth receives from the sun is transferred through radiation. The warmth that you receive as you sit in the sun is transferred to you through radiation. The warmth that you receive as you sit in the sun is transferred to you through radiation.

MI #2: Conduction Conduction is the transfer of heat energy through direct contact. Conduction is the transfer of heat energy through direct contact. The air molecules that come into contact with warm surface of the Earth are heated through conduction. The air molecules that come into contact with warm surface of the Earth are heated through conduction.

MI #3: Convection Convection is the transfer of heat energy through the circulation of a fluid (liquid or gas). Convection is the transfer of heat energy through the circulation of a fluid (liquid or gas). Warm air is less dense than cold air, so warm air rises and cool air sinks. Warm air is less dense than cold air, so warm air rises and cool air sinks. Home heating systems use this principle. Home heating systems use this principle.

So What…? Real Life Application Understanding how heat is transferred (in the atmosphere and everywhere else) is fundamental in understanding weather, cooking, heating systems, etc. Understanding how heat is transferred (in the atmosphere and everywhere else) is fundamental in understanding weather, cooking, heating systems, etc.
