UNDERSTANDING THE FLEX PERIOD WOODBRIDGE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2015-16

WHY ARE WE IMPLEMENTING A FLEX PERIOD AT WSHS? Flex Periods will better help WSHS meet the needs of our students:  Providing targeted interventions  Review/Remediation  Make Ups & Retakes  Enhancing current instructional time  Fewer Pull Outs  Additional time for help  Opportunity for enrichment

WHAT IS THE FLEX PERIOD? Flex periods are additional (shortened) meeting times of classes built into the bell schedule for each of the 7 scheduled classes on a rotating basis.  Will occur between 2 nd and 4 th periods on even days  Two 41-minute flex periods each flex (even) day  Typically, they will cycle through every 2 weeks or so.

ATTENDANCE Attendance  Attendance for Flex Periods will be taken  Students will be held accountable for attending flex periods just like regular classes.  Unexcused Tardies (UTY) count towards the total per quarter Exemption students  Ex: Gov. school, Nursing, Cosmetology, Culinary, HVAC, etc.  List of students exempted from Flex will be published and updated throughout the year

OER OER students  Early Release (OER) students are assigned to a teacher for that particular flex period for study hall all year.  Students with OER for a particular period should report to the Upper Cafeteria each time that period occurs during the flex period  Students with early release are not permitted to leave school during flex time.

INCLEMENT WEATHER  Code Red or Code Green: if school is closed for inclement weather on an even/flex day, the originally scheduled flex periods will occur during the next day school is in session. The flex calendar would then be adjusted to reflect the “shift” due to the school closure.  2-hour delay: if there is a 2-hour delay on an even/flex day, the flex periods that day are canceled and are not made up. The next even/flex day will have the next flex periods on the rotation calendar. The flex calendar would not be adjusted.

FAQ Is the FLEX Period optional for students? No, students are expected to attend assigned flex periods according to the calendar. Students may not cut flex periods. Attendance will be taken and students are expected to participate appropriately. Can students see another teacher during flex periods? The ability to flex in or out of a flex period will NOT initially be part of the program at WSHS (one change at a time). Ideally the ability for student to “flex in” or “flex out” or out will be implemented over time once students and teachers have adjusted to the new bell schedule and flex period rotation.
