2
Participants will describe the characteristics of a tornado. Participants will understand the tornado warning process. Participants will be able to take shelter from a tornado.
3
Weather report. State your name and describe your life at this moment in terms of the weather. Example: “My name is Frank and I am partly cloudy today ”.
4
A tornado is a violently rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the earth and cloud, and often visible as a funnel cloud. Tornadoes usually develop from supercell thunderstorms that have an organized rotation, call mesocyclones. Rapidly descending air causes the mesocyclone to move towards the ground. As the mesocyclone gets closer to the ground, a warm air updraft and a cool air downdraft creates a rotating funnel cloud. When the funnel cloud reaches the ground it becomes a tornado.
5
If you are outside when a tornado warning is issued seek indoor shelter if possible. If no indoor shelter is nearby, find a ditch or low- lying spot that offers protection from the wind and flying debris.
6
If you are in your car seek indoor shelter if possible. If no indoor shelter is nearby, you can drive at a right angle of the tornadoes path. Do not try to outrun the tornado. If you cannot drive away from the tornadoes path find a ditch or low-lying spot that offers protection from the wind and flying debris.
7
NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, pronounced “Noah”) weather radio to keep your family informed of tornadoes. When you hear the siren, take cover preferably underground. Everyone should seek shelter in an interior room away from windows on the lowest level. In many large buildings, interior hallways and restrooms are the best choice.
8
At work, know where your designated tornado shelters are located and have at least one source of receiving weather alerts. If you do not have a designated tornado shelter, locate an area on the lowest floor with as many walls as possible between you and the outside.
9
Have the groups discuss the location of the worksites designated shelters and evaluate them based on lowest level and multiples walls. If a shelter has not been designated, have the group select a location that can be recommended as the designated shelter location. The groups should also identify the sources available to receive weather alerts and suggest alternate sources.
10
Have at least one source of receiving weather related warnings at home, work, and while outside. Have a plan of where to go in the event of a tornado at home and work.
