Matric Overview Welcome to the world of work!
2
Strategies to Achieve Excellence Have goals Do class exercises Marry textbook info and class info on a weekly basis Study for Class tests and Cycle tests Revise often – e.g. mindmap Hand in all portfolio work – on time Do research project by first term Extra lessons
3
Strategies to Achieve Excellence Preprelim Friday 11 July 3 – 6pm Mapwork Saturday 12 July 8.30 – 1pm Prelim Winter School at HBC Revision lectures Past papers galore
4
You can do it! 2006 5A’s (20% of candidates) Lowest mark 50% Avg 67% 2007 1A (8% of candidates) Lowest mark 47% Avg 64% 2008 7A’s (64% of candidates) Lowest mark 60% Avg 72%

File Sections Climatology Geomorphology Settlement Economic – South Africa Revision Assessments Need a soft file for your project/portfolio
6
Grade 12 Research Project Taking your step in Science
7
Research Methodology 1.Identify a topic Interesting, easy Pose a geographic question, Identify a geographic problem
8
Typical Topics Site and situation of Broadacres shopping centre Business vs leisure tourism in Jhb River pollution in the Jukskei The ……………. impact of Cosmo City Gentrification in Melville Plotting the HeronBridge feeder area General river study
9
Typical topics Urban land use – A photographic survey PowerPoint presentation (Alien plants) Crime in a certain area Attitude survey Service delivery problems Uncontrolled development – consequences Microclimate experiments
10
Typical Topics Settlement around Hartebeespoort Dam Holiday destinations of a group of people Child-headed households - …….. impact
11
Research Methodology 2. Formulate Hypothesis (a theory to explain some fact that may or may not turn out to be true) Your theory that answers the question you posed or is a possible solution to the problem you identified E.g. Johannesburg’s rainfall has increased over the past 20 years. Objectives
12
Research Methodology 3. Plan information collection What information is necessary to check your theory? Where and when will you get this info? How long will it take to get ALL the info you need (not want)?
13
Research Methodology 4. Collect information While you are still excited, do as much as you can as quickly as you can. Best collection technique?
14
Research Methodology 5. Organise and display information Maps, charts, graphs, photos, tables, interview comments Describe the information State why you put each piece of info into your project i.e. explain relevance
15
Research Methodology 6. Analyse Information What did the information show you? What interesting trends did you see? What stood out/surprised you? What was left out? What does the info mean for your hypothesis? Was your theory proved true, false or partly true?
16
Research Methodology 7. Conclusions reached Limitations of study Suggested solutions Further study suggestions
17
Sources Bibliography divided into Primary: Inteviews, questionnaires, fieldwork, photographs, etc Secondary: Publications, internet, etc
18
Sources Internet research Necessary but not sufficient Max 3 sites Show evidence of reworking info – include internet pages at back. Google audit!! Evaluate, express opinions and draw conclusions
19
Schedule Proposed topic and synopsis: Tomorrow First draft: Thursday 10 April Between these dates, Mr Northmore is always available to brainstorm with you, provide guidance, listen to your frustrations, help with formatting etc.
20
Synopsis 1 typed page Topic: Why is this topic important? What sources of information will you need?: Where will I get this information: Research timeline:
21
Research Proposal Identify a problem Introduction -Hypothesis as a statement e.g. People modify drainage basins -Objective Specifically I will investigate… e.g. 1. The extent of urbanisation in the Chartwell area 2. The discharge pattern of the Jukskei in the last 3 years - Method How you are going to do your study, i.e. who are you going to interview? Why them? When? What are you going to ask?
22
Some Practical Issues
23
Headings Table of Contents Have one
24
Research design Tell the examiner what you are going to do and how you plan on doing it Keep this going throughout your presentation, tell what the data is and why you included it
25
Present data Analysis of data Solutions Conclusion: Have you answered your own question? Provide areas for further research. Bibliography - Alphabetical Appendix
26
Suggestions Bound and stapled. (No plastic sleeves) Johannesburg; not “Joburg”,however, Font: Arial 12; 1.5 spacing Heading levels Spellcheck/proofread
27
More Suggestions 1500 – 2500 words (3 - 6 pages of writing maximum) Integrate graphs, diagrams, photo’s and maps in text Google earth image for context? Explain the relevance of each graph etc - Quote sources properly in the text. You can use footnotes.
28
Most Important Do you answer your own question? Do you provide a viable solution to the problem you identified?
29
Oh yes… The best project will be presented by you at “THE GEOGRAPHY EVENING” 10 September … Be there!!
