Use Digital Tools to Build Meaning of Text 1.Conduct a close read on a digital copy of Letter from Christopher Columbus to the Treasurer of the King and Queen of Spain. 2.Assign groups of students one paragraph to analyzing and summarize. 1.Use the highlight tool to locate unfamiliar words. 2.Use the Look Up tool and/or the Synonym tool to define/research unfamiliar words. 3.Insert a comment for each paragraph. (On the Review tab, in the Comments group, click New Comment.) The comment should be a $2.00 summary. This task uses: Learning Objective(s): Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.

Little Birdie Tale Collaboration 1.Using each group summaries from Letter from Christopher Columbus to the Treasurer of the King and Queen of Spain, merge each summary comment into one document. 2.Use the Little Birdie Tales app to create a multi-media presentation. 1.Each group member adds a picture to illustrate the paragraph summary and records his or her voice reading the summary on separate slides 2.The presentation will be a collaborative summary of the entire letter with each student’s picture and voice recorded for his or her assigned paragraph. Constructive Feedback 1. Convert your Microsoft Word document to a Google Doc. 2.Share Google Doc to another fifth grade class. 3.Use the chat and comment section to discuss how to improve summaries. 4.Use the voice and comment app to discuss the differences and add constructive feedback.
