2 Creating opportunities for Edinburgh and the Lothians Beginnings:  Project began at Jewel & Esk College in August 2011 with delivery of 4 Mitsubishi i-MiEVs thanks to funding support from SEStran.  Prior to LEAF availability.  Launch was September 2011, with subsequent realisation that no charging infrastructure was present.  Staff & Students designed and manufactured 3kw posts with IP rated sockets.  Scholarship offered as part of eCar Project

4 Creating opportunities for Edinburgh and the Lothians Booking System:  December 2011 - eCar Booking system created using open-source software. 120 registered users by March 2012. In 2013 the system was updated. In 2015 the system has 550+ registered users.  Users click on a preferred timeslot for the vehicle of choice to create a booking, then select an end time to complete it. A confirmation email can be generated, and the booking printed out directly from the system to be exchanged for keys. 20112015

5 Creating opportunities for Edinburgh and the Lothians Booking Process:  Access Booking System through Intranet Launchpad, then register new account  Once logged in, a ‘Dashboard’ screen appears with announcements and invite to arrange an induction (for new users) before bookings can be made.  User contacts EV Administrator to arrange vehicle and charge posts induction (mandatory)  When vehicle and charge posts induction complete, user permissions are set on the system dependant on which home campus they are based at. Some users may have multiple sites access due to the nature of their roles.  User is now able to create/cancel/amend their own bookings.

6 Creating opportunities for Edinburgh and the Lothians Inductions:  30 minute ‘driving lesson’ in each type of electric vehicle – longer if required.  EV administrator demonstrates controls, how to plug and unplug the cars, and gives tips on efficient driving so that users get the best results from the vehicles. Inductee does the driving.  License checked at point of induction to ensure user has no more than 5 points for vehicular offenses.  Recovery processes explained in event of emergency, locations of contact details in each car shown.  Local routes of varying road conditions uses to familiarise drivers with EV operation.  User permissions set on booking system once induction completed.

7 Creating opportunities for Edinburgh and the Lothians Tracking:  Real-time GPS Tracker fitted to each vehicle  Hardware interrogating the ECU for vehicle monitoring  Allows monthly report to be downloaded detailing: Number of Trips Mileage travelled Location Speed Time of travel  Data gathered allows comparative route evaluations to be carried out and is used by students as part of their coursework.  We monitor and analyse data for over 60 EV’s across Scotland.

12 Creating opportunities for Edinburgh and the Lothians Vehicle Maintenance:  All vehicles given a monthly multi-point safety inspection (inc. Tyre tread depth/pressures, screenwash and systems checks).  Each car valeted every month as required. .HV battery health checks to monitor performance and condition.  All leased vehicles are on a full-maintenance contract (including recovery). Any issues reported and resolved quickly.  Driver Pack available in each car with emergency information/fault reporting etc.  EV Admin contact details in each car.  Maintenance details saved in electronic format.

13 Creating opportunities for Edinburgh and the Lothians Charge Post Maintenance:  All charge posts supported with 24/7 back office through Charge Your Car.  Their contact details are on each post, along with a post ID number.  Additional insurance premium required for the posts.  Posts are still under warranty and if required manufacturer’s engineers can attend to repair.  Tripped posts can be isolated and reset manually by EV Admin. Trapped cables can also be released manually if required.  Each post is cleaned as required on a monthly basis.  Full usage reporting is available from CYC.

14 Creating opportunities for Edinburgh and the Lothians Key Facts:  Bookings & Trips 4334 bookings and 22,587 trips  Distance travelled 2012 - 2013 = 14,140 miles 2013 - 2014 = 27,326 miles (+93% increase on 2012 – 2013 mileage) 2014 - 2015 = 36,937 miles (+35% increase on 2013 – 2014 mileage) 2015 to date = 33,016 miles  Edinburgh College fleet has travelled over 120,000 miles  Total ‘Grey Fleet’ Fuel Expenses Savings (@ £0.45/mile) Over £54,000  Emissions saved since project start* Over 26.3 metric tonnes of CO 2 *based on 136g/km emissions for typical family ICE car (eg. 2014 Ford Focus 1.6) Whole Project Overview, 2011 to September 2015:

15 ® Awards 2015 WINNER ® Awards 2015 WINNER Creating opportunities for Edinburgh and the Lothians GreenFleet: Good News: Student involvement and scholarships Congratulations to the Electric Vehicle administrator Bob Murphy, who won the Public Sector Fleet Manager of the Year Award at the GreenFleet Awards last week. The awards celebrate organisations that are trying to minimise the environmental impact of their business cars. The Edinburgh College electric vehicle fleet, was also finalists in the Public Sector Fleet of the Year: Small to Medium Award.

16 Creating opportunities for Edinburgh and the Lothians The Near Future:  Integrated Travel Portal – offering staff multiple travel options, aligned with both the Green Travel Plan and the Carbon Management Plan.  Analytics allows tracking of ‘clicks’ for each option. Leading to better reporting on usage and trends, including fuel expenses claims.  Creating greater focus on business travel.
