We divide them into "definite" and "indefinite" like this: Definite (de / het) When you talk about one thing in particular Indefinite (een) When you talk about one thing in general Think of the sky at night: in the sky we see 1 moon and millions of stars. That’s why we say: I saw the moon last night, but: I saw a star last night.

8 Look! It’s our friend again :) http://youtu.be/urq83C363uM Careful: this guy is American, so sometimes his accent (with ‘the’) is different! When do you choose ‘a’ and when ‘an’? Use ‘an’ when the next word starts with a vowel (klinker) sound. A melonAn apple A giraffeAn elephant A secondAn hour (you write it with an h, but you don’t hear the h!) The is sometimes pronounced with an ‘ie’-sound  ‘die’. You say ‘die’ when the next word starts with a vowel (klinker) sound. The nightThe evening The ballThe ice-skates
