3. Big Business United States became an industrial giant. Large factories and big cities developed because of growth. National wealth increases by 5 ½ times. Capitalism allowed for growth in America. Capitalism = an economic system in which people own factories and businesses, rather than the government.

5. Together We Stand, Divided We Fall Many American businesses made enormous profits. Workers didn’t share in the wealth, they barely made enough to live on. Workers who dared to complain usually lost their jobs. Labor unions were formed and became more influential.

6. Many immigrants came to America to find a new life became workers. The biggest problem that immigrants faced was prejudice. Prejudice is strong feelings of dislike, usually against one of another ethnic group or race or religion.

8. Don’t be a hater Prejudice was also occurring in southern states against African Americans. Segregation is separating someone form a group because they are of a different race, gender or religion. Southern states passed laws to enforce segregation. ‘Whites Only” meant to keep African- Americans and others out.

10. Jim Crow Laws A man named Homer Plessy refused to move from a ‘white’ railroad car. The supreme court ruled that separate cars are allowed if the cars are “separate but equal.”
