The Industrial Revolution (I.R.) changed the world and American Society = before all things made by hand It started in England around the 1750’s and spread to America by the 1850’s The I.R. is when people start working in factories on Assembly Lines to create new products. What would our lives be like without machines, electricity, and all our modern inventions?

Brought U.S. into the “modern age” with inventions like the cotton gin, trains, & steam engine Factories create jobs and greatly strengthens U.S. economy Because most factories are in big cities they grow in population. Some inventions make life easier…others, not so much…can you name one? How does it help/hurt?

Efficient machines begin to replace human workers, leads to strikes and riots Mining for coal, smokestacks, & factories along rivers cause massive air and water pollution And worst of all...people have to start living their life according to a clock!!!! (Can’t be late to work!)

Smog and smoke form around cities causing health problems Long work days (12+hours) in dangerous conditions where many workers were injured/killed Rising use of child labor, some as young as 9! Crowded apartments and living conditions for workers in Cities

Factory workers form groups called Unions who fight for their rights. They demand things like a 5 day work week, overtime pay, and safe working conditions Some are beaten and shot but they keep up the fight and their demands are met What would do you think factory owners would say to this many angry faces?
