2 Overview There are three Committees working on issues of accessibility: AODA Working Group Barrier Free Committee AODA Capital Spending Committee 2

3 AODA Working Group Responsible for reviewing the requirements of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) to ensure compliance with the AODA and the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulations The Committee is comprised of representatives from a number of business functions as well as school principals and superintendents Major focus is ongoing updates to the Multi-Year Accessibility Plan. 3

4 Barrier Free Committee Established in 1999 in response to the Board’s Special Education Plan The Committee mandate is to address the need for equitable access for students and staff with physical mobility issues Representation from Spec Ed (Low Incidence Coordinators (LIC) and Chief Occupational Therapist) & FS Design Unit As adopted in the TDSB Special Education Plan designated sites were established throughout the Board There are approximately 100 designated sites in the TDSB 4

5 Barrier Free Committee (cont.) Each Family of Schools (FOS) has at least one elementary and one secondary school with a relatively high degree of accessibility (designated sites) Requests vetted & coordinated by the area LIC. Ongoing review of designated sites to ensure equal number of schools in each FOS 5

6 AODA Capital Spending Committee This committee was established in March, 2015 The mandate of this Committee is to act as stewards for the Board with limited funds to improve accessibility for school, community, services in the TDSB The strategy of committee is to develop a funding process for the $5 million budget allocated The $5 million is divided into three categories:  Barrier Free Requests  Planned Program Priority  In Year Special Requests 6

7 Barrier Free Funding Requests 2015-2016 11 projects are currently planned and in various stages of completion Approximately $2.5 million has been allocated to these projects Projects include:  Upgrade washrooms to be fully accessible  Renovations of existing barrier free washrooms  Installation of power door operators and hold open devices  Addition of ramps/sloped pathways to allow front entrance accessibility 7

8 Planned Program Priority Data has been collected on the degree of accessibility for all TDSB schools All schools have been given a rating of A to F and are classified as either:  Accessible  Somewhat accessible  Not accessible 8

9 Accessible No significant vertical access barriers No significant horizontal barriers Have at least a universal washroom or male and female common washrooms Note: A1 – Accessible to all B1 – Accessible to students 9

10 Somewhat Accessible Accessible universal or common washrooms on entry level May have some barriers horizontally and/or vertically, but:  Allows students access to all special program spaces 10

11 Not Accessible Neither universal or common accessible washroom Sites that are wholly or partially inaccessible vertically and horizontally Sites that are barrier-ridden, especially those where horizontal access in to building is restricted. 11

18 Planned Program Priority (cont.) $1.5 million has been budgeted in 2015-2016 to add door operators to A1- and B1- rated schools This will result in upgrading the number of accessible schools from 80 to 146 Using the ratings, a 5 year plan will be developed to increase the number of accessible schools 18

19 In Year Special Requests Individual requests during the year to update facilities are sent to the Chair of the AODA Accessibility Capital Spending Committee (ACSC) Committee reviews requests 13 projects currently approved or under consideration $1 million allocated for these requests Factors considered for approval include:  Current degree of accessibility  Alternative solutions (nearby designated site)  Age of building  Whether the improvement will necessitate additional upgrades 19
