St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College School Council Week beginning Tuesday May 6th 2014

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College Let us begin by saying together Let everything we do and say this day be: In the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College As we GATHER we’d like to open with our School Council Prayer Please bow your heads...

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College Dear God Help us all… - to make the school a better place - to keep God’s Word and example during every day and every week - to make the days enjoyable for the teachers and helpers but most of all for the pupils. Help us all to work as a family in all we do. AMEN

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College Now we are going to LISTEN... On Wednesday 30th April we had a meeting during lesson 4 in the Romero Chapel Your representatives at this meeting were: Year 7 Andrew Dixon and Katie Drummond Year 8 Oscar Pimlett, Billy Rauer and Faye Naughton Year 9 Alex Cookson, Grace Croughan, Luke Drummond and Nathan Heaton Year 10 Rowena Machin, Conor Austin and Callum Talbot Staff Mrs Austin, Mrs Peace, Sister Margaret and Mrs Howard-Rigby Apologies Sue from the canteen

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College Agenda Welcome and opening prayer Minutes and matters arising The Canteen SEAL Suggestion Box AOB

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College First of all we thanked Billy Rauer and Faye Naughton who delivered all our assemblies in February. Grace Croughan and Oscar Pimlett will be delivering them all this week

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with PEACE Specialist Humanities College The Canteen Sue sent her apologies but did let us know that the ‘chocolate crunch brownie’ remains the best seller at approximately 400 a day! She asked us if ice lollies and the return of slush (new flavours) would be welcome and on your behalf we said ‘yes’

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with PEACE Specialist Humanities College The Canteen The question we discussed... ‘How could we make the dining room queuing more effective etc...’...and here are our ideas...

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College The ‘car park’ doors should be exit only Separate queuing systems for KS3 and KS4 A ‘quick’ till/service point for cakes and drinks only Problem of bags and their retrieval Staff are inconsistent with rules eg some allow food to be taken outside others do not Enlarge information notices and give verbal reminders of, for example, where to queue for different foods After verbal reminder, name and shame pupils who constantly leave tables in a ‘state’. Year 7 boys are particularly bad at this... Why are the doors with ‘push bars’ allowed to be used at break but not at lunch time? A concern from the ‘suggestion box’ that catering staff do not wear gloves when handling food. Mrs Peace commented that behaviour of all KS3 and 4 is generally very good in the canteen

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College We gave this list to Mr Dawson. He discussed our suggestions with: Carter Howard, Caroline Watson, Ross Hardy, Sam Whitehead, Olivia Park and Emily Worswick who are now going to feed back... These new developments will be put in place by next Monday

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College  SEAL This was a timely item as SEAL was the whole school focus last week The question for discussion... What can we do to encourage us all to use our SEAL cards more? These are a form of praise and reward that are underused

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College Our proposals: 1) That the SEAL card is redesigned with specific targets on it We came up with 6 categories: 1.Outstanding contribution to Collaborative Learning 2.Peer Assessment with valuable feedback 3.Rising to the challenge of independent work 4.Collective Worship 5.Representing the School/Contribution to School Life 6.Your free choice

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College In each category there would be 3 boxes to fill. When you had 15 out of a possible 18 signatures you would give your card to your form tutor who would then put it into the reward process system Possible rewards: House Points Money into canteen account Food Money Trip Credit loss return – although we felt there would have to be a tiered system of rewards to go with this

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College So what next? We have already spoken to Mrs Peace from the pastoral office and Miss O’Connor as SEAL coordinator who both really like the idea. They made some suggestions to our original wording: We only had ‘Representing the School’ until Mrs Peace suggested ‘Contribution to School Life’ be included here Miss O’Connor added to and improved our ‘Collaborative Learning’ original statement by suggesting the inclusion of ‘Outstanding contribution...’ There is a SEAL meting on May 15th where we will present our ideas The aim is to have the new style cards up and running by September

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College From the Suggestion Box... We had a suggestion about having cards available in the LRC... Billy (year 8 rep) spoke to Mrs Mason and there will now be a games table available in the LRC every Friday and included will be the following two card games: UNO TOP TRUMPS

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with PEACE Specialist Humanities College Now that you have LISTENED to us it may be that you want to check something so Mrs Mason has kindly put a copy of this collective worship power point on to the school website

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with PEACE Specialist Humanities College Which leads us on nicely, as always, to your RESPONSE to our assembly... Take time to reflect on the messages we have passed on to you and put your ideas in the suggestion box...

Dining Room Proposal With effect from 12 th May 2014

Changes to dining arrangements in the last few months A large number of students accessing the dining room in short space of time There is often a crush outside the dining room because of toilets, bag drop, fingerprint machine, classrooms which is dangerous Mr Dawson met with a group of students, 2 from each year group, to discuss what could be done in the short term. The proposal is to share this with staff and students this week so all understand, run it this system for 2 weeks until half term then evaluate it with student (survey) Background

Proposal All students queue down the Science corridor. Students can only join the queue from the doors at the end of the science corridor. The only way into the dining room is by joining the queue

Proposal When a student arrives at the double doors they will have a choice 1.Hot meal 2.Grab and go (pasta, backed potato etc) 3.Drink or snack – Cakes, slush etc. NB - Drinks and cakes will still be available at all till points

Proposal Once served students can leave from one of 3 exits. There will be staff on duty at the door, the queue, in the dining rooms and in the area around the bag drop/finger print machine to ensure movement is safe

This will start next week The system will run for 2 weeks and be evaluated by the student body (survey) to see if it works and what needs to change KS3 and KS4 will alternate sittings (ie KS3 first one week, KS4 the next) The catering company are investigating setting up outside kiosk There will be signs and maps to remind all students and staff about this Proposal

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College As we get ready to LEAVE Let us end by saying together Let everything we do and say this day be: In the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School SEAL it with Respect Specialist Humanities College And finally... Thank you for listening to us
