2 Learning objective – to examine the reasons why America dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima in 1945. I can describe some of the reasons why America bombed Hiroshima using either sources or my own knowledge. 11 Cut out the source cards and arrange them under the following headings in your exercise book. Source task – read the sources and complete the tasks on the worksheet. Some Americans believed that Japan would never surrender. Experts calculated that half a million American soldiers would die if they were forced to invade Japan. The bombs cost a lot of money to develop [over $2000 million] so the Americans wanted to test them properly. The Japanese had been very cruel to Allied prisoners they had captured. Some Americans felt Japan needed to be taught a lesson. The USA wanted to show the world – the USSR in particular – how powerful and advanced it was … and that they had the ‘ultimate weapon’. 1.Once you have arrange your sources into the relevant lists, write a paragraph on each reason why the Americans dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima using the sources to support your points. 2. Do you think America was right to use the atom bomb?
