Employee = Worker Employer = Boss Self-employed people who do not hire others are not employers according to the WCB Injured workers can receive WCB benefits as long as they cannot return to work A worker is still insured by the WCB even if an employer does not pay the premiums

Compulsory coverage – you are required by law to carry WCB insurance Employers are responsible for paying WCB premiums – their workers are not penalized if they fail to do so It is illegal for employers – those who provide compulsory coverage - to refuse to file an injury claim with the WCB Employers can be fined if they tell/reward an employee to not report an injury

Transportation, Communication & Utilities – trucking services, warehousing, movie theatres Wholesale & Retail – grocery stores, clothing stores, book stores, car dealers Retail Trade Services – hardware stores, service stations, car repair shops Business, Personal & Professional Services – staffing agencies, veterinary clinics, hair salons, restaurants, hotels

Voluntary Coverage - Non-WCB Businesses may choose to provide insurance coverage to their employees

Animal grooming services Museums Babysitting services Banks Accounting services Domestic help Modeling agencies Telemarketing Farming Real estate agencies Travel agencies Medical offices Golf courses THESE BUSINESSES DO NOT REQUIRE WCB COVERAGE

The Worker’s Compensation Act defines an accident as an incident injury caused by the following: Physical or natural disaster Willful and intentional acts by someone other than the worker (ie. a worker pulls a chair out from under a co-worker on purpose) Disablement (ie. a worker has a seizure on the job and injures his/her head) Conditions caused by occupational diseases (ie. a healthcare worker is pricked by a dirty needle)
