 Employee = Worker  Employer = Boss  Self-employed people who do not hire others are not employers according to the WCB  Injured workers can receive WCB benefits as long as they cannot return to work  A worker is still insured by the WCB even if an employer does not pay the premiums

 Compulsory coverage – you are required by law to carry WCB insurance  Employers are responsible for paying WCB premiums – their workers are not penalized if they fail to do so  It is illegal for employers – those who provide compulsory coverage - to refuse to file an injury claim with the WCB  Employers can be fined if they tell/reward an employee to not report an injury

 Voluntary Coverage - Non-WCB Businesses may choose to provide insurance coverage to their employees

 Animal grooming services  Museums  Babysitting services  Banks  Accounting services  Domestic help  Modeling agencies  Telemarketing  Farming  Real estate agencies  Travel agencies  Medical offices  Golf courses THESE BUSINESSES DO NOT REQUIRE WCB COVERAGE

 The Worker’s Compensation Act defines an accident as an incident injury caused by the following:  Physical or natural disaster  Willful and intentional acts by someone other than the worker (ie. a worker pulls a chair out from under a co-worker on purpose)  Disablement (ie. a worker has a seizure on the job and injures his/her head)  Conditions caused by occupational diseases (ie. a healthcare worker is pricked by a dirty needle)
