1 Unit 4 Day 7 (The Social Gospel Movement) Quote: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” - Matthew 6:10 Essential Question(s): How did the nation address social and economic uncertainty? Specified Content: Urbanization issues, Social Gospel Movement, settlement houses, Jane Addams, YMCA, Walter Rauschenbusch State Standards: Strand 1 Concept 7 PO 2 Assess how social developments influenced American society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

2 The Social Gospel Movement Due to the increase in industrialization and immigration large cities like New York will see significant social issues. Poverty, crime, racial tension, child labor, sanitation, alcoholism and economic inequity were some of these issues.

3 Followers of the Social Gospel movement tried to apply Christian ethics to solve the social issues of this time period. This movement begins in the 1880’s and will continue into the early 1900’s.

4 Some reformers inspired by the movement will open “settlement houses” to help the immigrants and poor with daycare, education, and health care. One of the first of these was Hull House in Chicago opened by Jane Addams.

5 The YMCA (Young Man’s Christian Association) became an important part of the Social Gospel movement in helping urban children adjust to city life without losing their religion.

6 Walter Rauschenbusch, a Baptist pastor from the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York, will become one of the leaders of this movement. In 1917 he published A Theology for the Social Gospel to try and give the movement more direction.
