26. Why did the witch hunts end? Once the monarchy was restored, England was more peaceful and people felt less frightened. The tension eased between Catholics and Protestants who had often accused each other of working for the devil. Better knowledge of science and technology meant that educated people stopped blaming things like illnesses and floods on magic. Many people disliked the violence and lawlessness caused by witch hunters. By the late 17 th Century, witch trials were becoming increasingly rare. There are many reasons for this.
