Feathers-modified scales with 2 fx: provides lift for flight & conserves body heat 3.Down feathers-soft, fluffy; cover body of young birds & provide insulating undercoat in adults 4.Contour feathers-give adults their streamlined shape & provide coloration and additional insulation 5. Flight feathers- specialized contour feathers on the wings & tail

2 6. Follicles-tiny pits in skin from which feathers develop 7. Preening-birds use their beaks to rub their feathers with oil secreted by a preen gland, located at the base of the tail 8. Molting- to shed or regrow feathers periodically 9. Brood patch-thick, featherless patch of skin on the abdomen 10.
