Market Research Defined What is market research? Market research is the collecting, presenting and analysing of information, about customers, competitors and market trends.

Secondary Research You have studied this topic before in Year 12 so lets see what you can remember. What You Need to Find Out? Think back to the starter exercise, what sort of information do you need to find out about your business idea from your market research. You need to try to find out about as many of the following for your business idea and must illustrate your work with graphs and diagrams. Size of the market Market share Competitors Consumer information

Where Can I find out? There are many places that you can try to find out information about your business idea: Government Statistics the government produce a huge amount of research at : http://www.statistics.gov.uk/hub/index.htmlhttp://www.statistics.gov.uk/hub/index.html Specialist Market Research companies – who may provide free summaries e.g. http://www.keynote.co.uk/ http://www.keynote.co.uk/ Trade Organisations – most businesses have an body which represents their interests and you can find general information from them. Sometimes they will have their own magazine e.g. The Grocer The general media e.g The Economist; The Guardian etc and other up market papers and websites. Competitors – look at their websites and/or annual reports. It may well be that some of the smaller competitors do not have websites. General Google search – use a variety of different combinations of words/phrases.
