INDONESIAN MASKS A Brief Introduction Masks are important cultural icons that help preserve tradition, religion and history. This is especially true of Indonesia and Indonesian masks. Indonesian islands like Bali, Java, Lombok all have different types of masks with cultural significance that symbolize people, deities, demons and more. The masks are also very important in passing down oral history from generation to generation. Unique characters are symbolised and embodied within a mask. In some cases masks can be used to guard off evil spirits. It would take a life time or more to collect all the mask from Indonesia and to fully understand them.

CELULUK A comic witch. She can frighten others and be easily frightened by others

JERO GEDE Looks like a grotesque monster but is actually a harmless clown. His fangs symbolise a character pursuing needs that are never satisfied.

BARONG MACAN This barong resembles a tiger. The tiger is the keeper of balance between the earthly and spiritual world. Macan protects villages from the harmful influences of dead souls.

SIDA KARYA PUTIH A mesmerising, powerful character who wards off evil spirits. The white face symbolises purity. The strange expression of his mouth, his leer, reflects that things are not always what they appear to be.

HANUMAN The white monkey, the son of the God of the Wind, Bayu wakya. He is clever and courageous general of Rama’s monkey army. He has tremendous strength and energy to fight the causes of truth. Demands nothing in return.

MATA GEDE A demon servant Can be either frightening or humorous. The horsehair is from the island of Sumba.

BARONG & RANGDA Good v Evil. The Barong is a powerful, protective, spirit, Rangda, also known as Dewi Durga,is the Hindu Goddess of Death. These sacred Masks are believed to hold the spirit within them and are worshipped on altars during festivals.

LEYAK MATA BESIK A student of black magic, a servant of Rangda. BONDRES CUNGIH A buck-toothed, harelipped lazy clown. Will do anything to avoid working.

RARUNG A student of black magic who disposes of the dead. A servant of Rangda, she initially appears as a beautiful woman. Originally created from human blood. Can transform herself into a tiger and a bird.

RAJA PUTRI Personifies the perfect noblewoman: beautiful, refined, charming and clever. TELEK MUANI Related a to a demon family, has a sly smile and intense gaze hinting at its demonic origins.

Even today on predominantly Moslem Java, trance dances are performed in the villages with a variety of animal masks. The mask (topeng) is held over a fire to draw the spirit of the animal into it and to bring the dancer under it's power.

HOMEWORK Using this PowerPoint, photographs of your own or the Internet find masks from Indonesia and one other country that really appeal to you. Create an informative page in your workbook – one page for each country. Display the images interestingly and explain the following. 1.Where are the masks from? 2.What are they used for? 3.What character does the mask symbolise? 4.How has it been made to symbolise this? 5.Why have I chosen these masks?
