TEACH US TO PRAY
2
James 5:16 “The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”
3
Jesus’ School of Prayer
4
Matthew 6:13 “And don't lead us into trials, but rescue us from the evil one.”
6
1. God doesn’t tempt us, but does allow us to be tested.
7
James 1:13 teaches, “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God’ for God cannot be tempted by evil and He Himself does not tempt anyone.”
8
James 1:2-4 “My brothers and sisters, think of the various tests (same word as in our text) you encounter as occasions for joy. After all, you know
9
that the testing of your faith produces endurance. Let this endurance complete its work so that you may be fully mature, complete, and lacking in nothing.”
10
Here is our spiritual dilemma for the first part of this prayer.
11
We know that trials are used by God to grow us stronger spiritually and emotionally, but we also know that we don’t want to be put in those difficult situations!

2.Temptation to Sin Comes from the Evil One.
14
This is a prayer of preparation for future temptations.
15
1 Peter 5:8 “Be clearheaded. Keep alert. Your accuser, the devil, is on the prowl like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
16
Luke 22:31-32, “Simon, Simon, look! Satan has asserted the right to sift you all like wheat. However, I have prayed for you that your faith won't fail. When you have returned, strengthen your brothers and sisters.”
17
satan and his helpers have one desire for your life
18
a. satan and his helpers have one desire for your lifeto destroy it.
19
satan and his helpers don’t want to just ruin your day; they want to ruin your life
20
They don’t want to hurt your life; they want to destroy every bit of your life!
21
John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
22
b. satan has to ask permission to bring temptations into our life and sometimes the Lord allows him to.
23
c. If you try and defeat him on your own, then you are toast!
24
This prayer is a SAFEGUARD.
25
a safeguard against our pride.
26
a safeguard against our spiritual apathy.
27
Notice that satan not only attacks us at our points of weaknesses, but also at our points of strength.
28
d. Jesus prays for us! “I'm not asking that you take them out of this world but that you keep them safe from the evil one.” John 17:15
29
e. If we pray to Jesus and trust in Him and not in ourselves, then we will be overcomers.
30
James 4:7 “Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you.”
31
