2 High and Low Tides Tides occur because of the pull of the moon on earth. The gravity of the moon pulls on the ocean, causing it to rise slightly The “bulge” is called high tide The lower water is called “low tide

3 Tides continued 2 High tides occur per day. Tides change approximately every 6 hours

4 Moon, Sun, and Gravity Not only does the moon exert a force on the Earth but the sun does as well Just like there are 4 tides a day there are 4 special tides every 29 days (every time the moon goes around the earth)

5 Spring and Neap Tide When the sun and moon are on the same or opposite sides, the tide is especially high. This is called Spring Tide When the sun and moon are on perpendicular sides, high tide is a little lower than normal and low tide is a bit higher than normal so the difference is the lowest of the month.
