5 Attitude, barriers, society… If people’s attitudes were to change and there was effective public policy that legislated for the removal of environmental barriers, then many of the problems associated with disability would disappear. (Morris, 1991) Disablement lies in the construction of society, not in the physical condition of the individual. However, this argument is usually rejected precisely because to accept it involves recognising the extent to which we are not merely unfortunate but are directly oppressed by a hostile social environment. (Drake, 1996)

11 How would you feel? Less than 8% of disabled people use wheelchairs. The majority of impairments are not visible. (Papworth Trust disability facts and figures 2010)

12 Legs, Trunk and Arms (LTA) In the LTA boat class athletes sit on a sliding seat and use legs, trunk, and arms to propel the boat. The LTA boat class is further broken down into the following subclasses: Physical Disability (LTA-PD) Visual Impairment (LTA-VI) ImpairmentDisability (Guide Only) Vision ImpairmentB1, B2, B3 Physical Impairment Limb Loss or deficiency Amputation from trauma, cancer, limb deficiency from birth Loss of muscle strength Spinal cord injury, Spina Bifida, Transverse Myelitis, Sacral Agenesis, Spinal Tumours, Erbs Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy Hypertonia Ataxia Athetosis Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Hereditary Spastic Sclerosis Joint movement restrictions Arthrogryposis, Talipes Equinovarus, joint fusions

My sights are clearly set on the Rio Games” Birthdate: 02/05/1992 Hometown: Peterborough Education: Brunel University Began rowing in: 2003 Clubs: Peterborough City RC, University of London Boat Club Original coach(es): Brian Young, Tom Dyson James started rowing aged 11 through a taster session at Peterborough RC. He went on to represent Britain in able-bodied junior rowing and has won the Fawley Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. James now qualifies for Para-Rowing due to restricted ankle movement.
