1 Impressionism

2 Claude Monet 1840-1926 Impressionism Painting Oil Paints Built his own gardens to paint: worked on several at a time, to match the light.

3 Principal Characteristics of Impressionism Painted the LIGHT color rather than the object’s color – subjects would be painted differently depending on season, time of day…. Captured the ESSENCE of the subject, rather than the precise detail. Deviation for the current cultural expectations for art – it was not well received originally because it was not ‘technically correct’ enough for the art patrons of the time.

4 Characteristics of Impressionist Paintings Asymmetrical Balance Use of Colored Shadows Broken Color or Broken Brushstrokes Use of Impasto (or Thick Paint) Subject Matter - The subject matter of Impressionism is often casual, everyday life, captured with an immediacy enhanced by transient effects of light and atmosphere. Photographic Influence Painted "En Plein Air" - painting out-of-doors, is a phenomenon closely connected with Impressionism
