Perfectionism The original idea of perfectionism was from the psychodynamic proposed by Adler and Horney.

Perfectionism Human in a goal-oriented life has an innate motivation that trigger him/her to seek for the excellence. This excellence can be inferred the term “perfect.” (Adler, 1950)

Perfectionism Horney: Perfectionists would not be satisfied with their achievements. (hind their weakness & be liked by other people)

Classification Hamachek’s (1978) model normal ----------------- neurotic set a high standard for themselves They have positive faith on self They allow and admire imperfect outcome. set unreachable high standards. They can not be satisfied with the performance they made, and the result.

Classification Frost, Marten, Lahart and Roseblate (1990) Six dimenstions: (1) concern over mistakes (2) personal standards (3) parental expectations (4) parental criticism (5) doubts about actions (6) organization

Classification Hewitt & Flett (1991) Three dimensions of perfectionism: (1) Self-oriented (for oneself) (2) Socially-oriented (to please others) (3) Other-oriented (impose on others)

Motivation Motivation may be the term that is suitable to explain why one succeed or fail on a simple or complex task. To be motivated or not can result the outcome made by a man. (Brown, 1980)

Motivation “ Intrinsic motivation behaviors were aimed at bringing about certain internally rewarding consequences, namely, feelings of competence and self-determination. ” (Deci, 1975)

Motivation “ Extrinsically motivated behaviors are carried out in anticipation of a reward from outside and beyond the self. ” (Brown, 2000)

The Relationship between perfectionism and intrinsic/extrinsic motivation The adaptive facet may be partly influenced by intrinsic motivation. (Flett, Russo & Hewitt, 1994) The adaptive facet may contribute to persistence on tasks and a strong sense of self-efficacy. (Bandura, 1989)

The Relationship between perfectionism and intrinsic/extrinsic motivation Self-oriented perfectionism is related to extrinsic motivation. (Mills & Blankstein, 1998) be motivated by recognition of their academic work be sensitive to other opinions of their work and ideas to judge their success relative to other people
