History/Background 1860’s-1880’s Centered in France Reaction to the restrictions of the art that was popular at that time The name Impressionism came from Monet’s painting, Impression: Sunrise, which was singled out for criticism by an art critic. Many of the Impressionists were friends

Characteristics Goal: capture the effect of light on a scene Short strokes (brush strokes were obvious) Palette – Pastel Colors Unmixed colors painted on canvas which gave the impressionism of another color “En Plain Air” – painted outdoors (oftentimes landscapes Real life subject matter

Claude Monet 1840-1926 In the beginning, he was a caricaturist Would set up 3 easels – paint the same scene 3 times depending on the light Some of his paintings have sand in them (from the beach where we was painting). Married his mistress, who he had begun dating 3 years before his wife’s death. FYI - there is also a famous Impressionist painter named Eduard Manet.

Edgar Degas One of the founders of Impressionism, but he rejected the term. He liked to be called a Realist. Over ½ of his works depict dancers. Never married Spent his last years, nearly blind, wandering the streets of Paris

Mary Cassatt 1844-1926 American May have had a romantic relationship with Degas. And in fact, it was Degas who first encourage her to paint mothers and their children to set her apart from other artists. Never had a child but they were often the subject matter of her paintings
