Four Main Christological Texts John 20:31 1.John 1:1-18 2.Philippians 2:5-11 3.Colossians 1:15-23 4.Hebrews 1:1-4
3
Philippians 2:5-11 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

John 20:31 Today we discuss 2 points from this passage: 1.The Humility of Jesus (6-8) A.Fully Divine B.Fully Human 2.The Exaltation of Jesus (9-11)
5
John 20:31 1. The Humility of Jesus (6-8)
6
Fully Divine John 20:31 1.Scripture Makes Direct Claims: John 1:1, 1:18, 10:30, 17:3, 20:28; Acts 20:28; Rom 9:5; 1 Cor. 8:6; Col 1:15, 2:2; Titus 2:13; Heb. 1:8; James 1:1; 2 Pet 1:11; 1 John 5:20, and Rev. 12:19. 2.Divine Prerogatives: He taught with authority (Matt 7:28-29), he forgave sins (Mk 2:5-10), claimed Lordship over the Sabbath (Mk 2:28), and received worship (Mt. 14:33, 28:9, John 20:28). These prerogatives belong to God alone. 3.Divine Works: The miracles Jesus performed testify to his deity (John 10:24-25). He is identified as the Creator (John 1:3, Col 1:16), and Sustainer (Heb 1:3, Col 1:17).
7
Fully Divine John 20:31 1.John 8:58, Jesus stated that “before Abraham was, I am.” 2.Rev 22:13, Jesus claims that he is the Alpha and Omega. Rev 1:8, God the Father claimed to be the Alpha and the Omega. 3.John 10:30, “I and the Father are one.” 4.John 20:28, “Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”

Does Islam & Christianity worship the same God? John 20:31 John 8:19, Jesus says, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 1 John 2:23, states, “No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.” Luke 10:16, indicates that “the one who rejects me [Jesus] rejects him who sent me [The Father].” 1 Tim. 2:5-6, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.”
9
Fully Human John 20:31 1.Jesus had a human body like ours: a)He became tired (John 4:6). “Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey.” b)He became thirsty (John 19:28). Jesus stated, “I thirst.” c)He was hungry (Matt 4:2). After fasting for 40 days, “he was hungry.” d)He died (Luke 23:46). 2.Jesus had a human mind: (Luke 2:52), “Jesus increased in wisdom…” 3.Jesus soul or spirit was troubled: (John 12:27, John 13:21). 4.Jesus felt emotions: sorrow (Matt 26:38), he marveled (Matt 8:10), he wept (John 11:35).
10
Fully Human John 20:31 Hebrews 4:15-16, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Philippians 2:5-11 John 20:31 1.The Humility of Jesus (6-8) 1.The Exaltation of Jesus (9-11)

We, then, following the holy Fathers, all with one consent, teach men to confess one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the same perfect in Godhead and also perfect in manhood; truly God and truly man, of a reasonable [rational] soul and body; consubstantial [coessential] with the Father according to the Godhead, and consubstantial with us according to the Manhood; in all things like unto us, without sin; begotten before all ages of the Father according to the Godhead, and in these latter days, for us and for our salvation, born of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, according to the Manhood; one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, Only-begotten, to be acknowledged in two natures, inconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably; the distinction of natures being by no means taken away by the union, but rather the property of each nature being preserved, and concurring in one Person and one Subsistence, not parted or divided into two persons, but one and the same Son, and only begotten, God the Word, the Lord Jesus Christ, as the prophets from the beginning [have declared] concerning him, and the Lord Jesus Christ himself has taught us, and the Creed of the holy Fathers has handed down to us.

Application John 20:31 1.The incarnation to the cross is the greatest act of love and identification ever known. 2.Jesus humbled Himself and was exalted. We should follow our Lord and be humble. Have this mind in you which was in Christ Jesus. 3.These verses confirm who Jesus is. He is neither a liar, nor a lunatic, but He is Lord. 4.We have a Savior who is humble; who understands our temptations and weaknesses; and who is victorious. Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.

Apostles Creed We believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; The third day he rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sits at right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence, he shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
