2 SOME COMMON INHERITED DISEASES  Birth Defects: cleft palate/lip, neural tube defects such as spina bifida  Cancer: bowel, breast, ovarian, bowel, melanoma and prostate  Cardiovascular conditions: high blood pressure, some causes of heart disease, high cholesterol  Metabolic: diabetes  Neurological/psychiatric conditions: Alzheimer disease in later life, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder  Muscular/skeletal: arthritis, rheumatic disorders, osteoporosis  Skin conditions: psoriasis, moles, eczema  Respiratory: asthma, allergies, emphysema

11 PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT INFLUENCES?  living in a clean, safe environment  living in an area that is polluted or  Living in an area that has a high crime rate;  Living in an area that has a high pollen count, mold, dust or smog  living with a smoker

12 SOCIAL INFLUENCES  the importance of supportive family members or adult role models;  choosing friends who are loyal and supportive and care about their health.

13 CULTURAL INFLUENCES  Culture refers to the collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group.  Your culture gives you a sense of identity.  language,  foods,  traditions,  religion;  being tolerant of our differences and recognizing the things we have in common

14 BEHAVIOR  Although you have no control over your heredity and only limited control over your environment, you have a great deal of control over your behavior. Suppose your family has a history of heart disease. This doesn’t mean that you will “follow in their footsteps.” You can lower your risk of developing the disease by practicing healthy habits, such as reducing your intake of high-fat foods and engaging in regular physical activity.

15 A POSITIVE ATTITUDE  The way you view situations—your attitude—greatly affects the choices you make.  Studies have shown that people who tend to see the positive in situations are more likely to have better health than those who see only the negative.  Try to view challenging situations positively and think in realistic terms.  A positive attitude in life has been proven to play a major role in health and wellness.
