BHB’s (Bring Home Binders) The BHB will come home every night. The agenda and purple daily folder need to be checked by parents every night and papers should be removed each day, except for the Reading Log. A helpful suggestion for you: keep your own folder at home with important information, previous word study lists, newsletters, study guides, etc. for easy access and review throughout the year.
10
Responsibility and Independence It is our goal for your child to become an independent and responsible citizen. Here is how you can help: Help your child by holding them responsible for their own homework and behavior. Let them pack their own backpacks the night before school, etc.
11
Homework Assignments can be found in the Daily agenda. Please expect 3-4 nights of homework each week. Our homework is necessary reinforcement of the skills taught in the classroom and review for tests. NOTE: Word study homework will be checked on Fridays before the test. Homework is due the next day unless otherwise noted.
12
Behavior/Citizenship We have a discipline/citizenship plan that is based on our class vision, mission, and purpose, along with the PWCS code of behavior. Every Friday you need to check the Daily Behavior Radar charts in their BHB. Please sign the Radar chart on Friday and return to school on each Monday. Your child will be receiving a homework grade for this.
13
Rewards/Consequences Recognition, privileges, and incentives will be given to children who demonstrate good choices and positive citizenship in the classroom and throughout the school. Consequences: The first will be a WARNING. Each offense after that will be a Think It Out form that will be filled out by your child. It will need to be signed and return the next school day.
14
Math We use a blended approach to Mathematics. We do teach the traditional algorithms, alongside other strategies. Students are taught a variety of approaches and are encouraged to use the ones that work best for them. Please take the student Math book home for your use. PLEASE put it in a safe place, as you are responsible for its condition upon return.
15
Word Study Word study began last week. Daily assignments are found glued into the front of their word study notebooks. New lists are given each week at your child’s level. Word study tests are given every Friday. Your child will earn 1 point for putting the word in the correct sort, and 1 point for the correct spelling.
16
Reading Reading comprehension is a huge focus in 3 rd grade. Students should be able to summarize stories in their own words and pick out story elements (setting, plot, characters, etc.) Your child will be meeting in a guided reading group each week to practice reading strategies at their instructional reading level. Work with your child to complete their monthly reading logs.
17
Assessments Students will be taking weekly reading comprehension, math fact, and word study assessments. –Students will be tracking their progress in their data notebooks. Unit tests will be announced several days prior to administration. Study guides will be sent home as applicable.
18
