4.0.C.States of Matter Essential Question: What makes up everything around us? SCIENCE 5

Objective: Students will provide evidence from investigations to indentify the processes that can be used to change materials form one state of matter to another in order to describe the changes heating and cooling cause to the different states in which water exist.

Engagement: -Give each group a cold piece of modeling clay. -Tell them to use their hands to warm the clay for a few minutes. -Pass the clay to another student and have them form a new shape with the clay. Questions: -How did the clay change after you held it for a few minutes? Guide students to infer that matter can change when heat is added.

Exploration: -Students will rotate from 3 stations with worksheets and questions to answer.

Station 1: Solid to Liquid Procedure A -Students will have an ice cube placed in their hand. -Time how long it will take for the ice cube to melt. Questions: 1. How long does it take for the cubes to melt in your hand? 2. What caused the ice cube to melt? Explain

Procedure B -Students will take an ice cube and use a candle lighter to heat it. -Time how long it will take for the ice cube to melt. Questions: 1. How long does it take for the cubes to melt with lighter? 2. What caused the ice cube to melt? Explain 3. Compare and contrast what happen to the ice cube in activities A and B.

Station 2: Liquid to Gas to Liquid Procedure - Place 1 cup of hot water in a clear mug. - Put a paper on top of the mug. - Observe the water in the mug for 3 minutes. - Take the paper form the mug and answer the questions. Questions: 1. What happened to the paper? 2. What are the changes you notice with the hot water? 3. What explanation can you make form this result?

Station 3: Computer Procedure -Students will login to Discovery Education and complete that virtual lab for three states of matter.Discovery Education

Explanation -Go over the questions -Clear-up any misconception. -Explain the importance of water’s ability to exist in all three states within the temperatures normally found on Earth.

Elaboration Group Activity -Students will draw, write, or construct evidence of their understanding of the three states of matter.

Evaluation Presentation of group activity - Students will present evidence of their understanding to the class.
