Hydrology
2
Earth’s Water
3
Renewable resources can be replenished in a human life span.
4
Hydrologic Cycle
5
Why is hydrology so important?
6
Groundwater
7
Introduction to Groundwater The zone of saturation occurs where water completely fills the open spaces in the soil and rock. The upper limit of this zone is called the water table. The zone above the water table is called the zone of aeration.
8
Saturation
9
Clay in the ground?
10
Clay acts as an aquitard
11
Aquifer It isn’t a lake, but water that is trapped in the rock and soil underground.
12
Aquifer
13
Aquifers can be used as ground water to supply fresh water.
14
Vocabulary Porosity- how much water the soil can hold Permeability- the rock’s ability to allow water to pass through Porosity- how much water the soil can hold Permeability- the rock’s ability to allow water to pass through
15
Importance of being permeable and porous That soil will allow water to pass through and accumulate
16
Drainage Basin The area that water from streams and rivers accumulat es in
17
Continental Divide

US. Groundwater Usage
20
Rising Water Tables
21
Falling Water Tables
22
Infiltration Capacity how much rain can ground absorb before water runs off
23
Dangers of low infiltration capacity
