Situation: Unlocked vehicles in and around Palm Coast continue to be the primary reason criminals have been able to enter vehicles with ease and take items usually left in plain view. The items stolen include, but are not limited to phones, computers, cameras, electronic items, currency, and firearms. Since Jan.1, 2014, over 40 firearms were stolen from vehicles in the Flagler County area. Only a few have been recovered. Discussion: It is of a paramount importance to involve our community and elected officials in our crime prevention efforts. The FCSO continues to issue crime prevention tips via the media and social media. We also discuss these tips and trends during crime watch meetings and discussions with citizens during the investigation of a crime.

The Action We Have Taken: The FCSO tracks all crime trends on a daily basis and designs action plans to address the crime issues. We have generated many news releases and postings on our social media pages advising of the crimes and what can be done to prevent citizens from being victimized. With the joint cooperation of the City of Palm Coast, we have placed variable message sign boards in many neighborhoods advising citizens of the crimes that have been occurring. The City of Palm Coast has agreed to add crime prevention and reporting tips to their social media pages, utility bills and news letter. We have increased patrols and special operations. We have investigated many of the these cases and have arrested many responsible for these crimes.

Crime Prevention Tip s Vehicles: Lock your vehicles! Park in well-lit areas. Do not leave valuables in the open. This includes keeping an unsecured firearm in your vehicle. Either take the items of value with you, or hide them from general view. If equipped, activate your alarm. Residences: Keep your garage doors closed and locked. If equipped, always activate your alarm when away from home. Make sure you have adequate lighting around your home. Lights and motion sensors should be checked quarterly. Keep shrubbery trimmed back to allow for an easy, unobstructed view of your home. Participate in neighborhood crime watch. To join a neighborhood crime watch group, or for anyone who would like a free crime prevention survey of their home, they can call the FCSO’s Community Outreach Unit at (386) 586-2632.

Reporting Suspicious Activity Join us in the “See Something, Say Something” campaign. This is part of a national campaign to educate citizens on reporting activities to law enforcement officials. If you do see something suspicious, or something that looks out of the ordinary, to include unknown vehicles parked in driveways or strangers coming to your door, call 911 immediately.
8
What Can You Do? “See Something, Say Something” and report all suspicious activity to 911. Lock your vehicles and remove valuables from the general view of others. If anyone has any information about any crimes in Flagler County, they are asked to call the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office at 313-4911. Citizens can remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at (888)-277-8477 (TIPS). Tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
