5 What is an Herbivore? A species that eats mostly plants. These include: –Deer –Horses –Rabbits –Cattle and sheep –Bees and grasshoppers

6 What is a Carnivore? A species that eats mostly meat, whether it’s an animal or an insect Some carnivores are: –Felines (lions, tigers, cats) –Birds of prey (Eagles, hawks, owls) –Sharks –Frogs –And spiders

7 What Is an Omnivore? A species capable of eating plants and meat. Some omnivores are: –Humans –Pigs –Most bears –Raccoons –Most primates (apes and monkeys) –Sea gulls and other birds

8 Why do we eat meat? Protein = muscle growth Vitamins/minerals = good health Sticks with you = FIGHTS HUNGER It tastes good

9 How Much Meat and Poultry Should We Eat Per Day? A.2-4 ounces B.3-5 ounces C.5-7 ounces D.7-9 ounces E.1 pound Answer: C. Americans on average should eat 5-7 ounces. Men need a little more and woman need a little less. Protein needs increase as you grow into adulthood. 3 oz.3 oz. 5 oz.

11 How do you know the correct amount of meat to eat? Kids your age need two meat or bean servings per day Serving is 3 ounces and looks like a deck of cards McDonald’s hamburger = 1.6 ounces of beef 6 nuggets = approx. 3 ounces

12 Germs Everywhere! Tiny, invisible part of nature How many could fit on the head of a pin? –1,000! Live on your hands, under your nails, in your mouth, between your toes On raw foods like apples, carrots, beef or chicken Soap and heat destroy bacteria

17 That’s Why We Need to Cook Burgers Carefully! When a burger is cooked, the thermometers should say 160 degrees F! “Burgers are nifty at 160!”

18 Let’s Be Safe! Don’t eat pink burgers –Please cook them some more! –Ask your waiter for more grill time! Cook Some More Please!

22 Being Kind to Animals Makes Better Meat! We know that taking care of animals is the right thing to do. It also makes the meat look and taste better. There are lots of good reasons to take care of livestock.
