Focus of India Responsible Business Index IRBI draws largely on the Principle Eight of the National Voluntary Guidelines (NVGs) 2011 that focuses on inclusive growth and equitable development

What does the index measure? The index primarily looks into: 1.Policy recognition - existence of publically disclosed policies and related mechanisms. 2.Knowledge Systems - public disclosure on existence of a system in the company to know and understand ‘what is happening’ It does not measure actual compliance or performance of the companies. Elements of the index Community Development-Business Recognizes the role of the business in fostering community development by addressing local priorities and respecting local concerns and knowledge Community as business stakeholder-Business Recognizes vulnerable communities as stakeholders and be responsible and transparent about impact of its processes on the community as part of core business Non-discrimination at workplace -Business Recognizes non-discriminatory employment practices and promotes diversity in workspace Employees Well-being-Business recognizes its responsibility towards creating an enabling environment for workers and prohibits any form of forced labour and child labour Inclusiveness in supply chain -Business recognizes its role in creating an enabling environment for workers in supply chain and takes responsibility of developing an inclusive supply chain

NVG key principles (specific mention of children) Principle 3- Core Element 3 : Businesses should not use child labour, forced labour or any form of involuntary labour, paid or unpaid. Principle 4: Businesses should respect the interestsof, and be responsive towards all stakeholders, especially those who are disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalised.(Vulnerable and Marginalised group- as defined on page 47 of NVG: Group of individuals who are unable to realize their rights orenjoy opportunities due to adverse physical, mental, social, economic, cultural, political, geographic orhealth circumstances. These groups in India include: Women and girls, People with disabilities, Children, Tribals, Migrants, migrant workers)

Principle 5-Core Element 3: Businesses should recognize and respect the human rights of all relevant stakeholders and groups within and beyond the workplace, including that of communities, consumers and vulnerable and marginalized groups. Principle 8: Businesses should support inclusive growth and equitable development (The principle recognizes the value of the energy and enterprise of businesses and encourages them to innovate and contribute to the overall development of the country, especially to that of the disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalised sections of society.)
